This course is run and the trainers provided by the Disability Resource Centre This participative workshop will enable attendees to confidentially discuss the impact of dealing with students in distress and review ways of working with them. Aimed at all frontline staff, including porters, administrators, librarians and so on, and will have a focus on shorter interactions where there is no ongoing welfare role. The workshop will discuss ways of being supportive in ways which are effective and manageable for students and staff. The workshop will also address when to say yes – and when to say no. The workshop will be conducted in a relaxed and open way and will result in those attending feeling more confident in these interactions. The workshop will also update attendees on available sources of local support for students. It will help to maintain positive aspects of your natural accent whilst enabling you to be easily understood by native English speakers. This course will be facilitated online via Zoom. The session will cover reasons for the awarding gaps drawn from U.K higher education sector, with updated information about changes to awarding gaps following the pandemic. Findings from internal and student-lead research into the reasons for the awarding gaps will be shared, and then participants will be given opportunities to analyse their own internal information and develop a clearer understanding of the multiple factors that might impact their students' academic performance and eventual degree classification, on topics ranging from assessment, representation in the curriculum, college-based educational experiences and learning environments. This session will pave the way for the 3rd in the series, where participants will develop their own project or initiative.
