Scientific Writing

This one-day course focuses on the structure of good scientific writing. Including writing exercises as an integral part of the workshop, we will look at the practical process of writing, the nature of scientific publishing, and the importance of editing. The day will finish with a group editing session in which you apply the ideas you have learnt by editing each other's work. For the group editing session you will need to write a 300-word abstract about your work in advance, and bring it with you as a printout (see 'Prerequisites' below for details). REGISTRATION starts at 9.00am on the day. Please ensure you arrive on time as latecomers may be refused entry.

The syllabus covers the key elements of the project management life cycle including; planning and scheduling, communication, stakeholders, reporting and risk management (see attached overview). The second day will conclude with a one hour multiple choice exam which will lead to a certificate from the APM. This is suitable for those who are relatively new to project management or those who require insight into project management processes and techniques. This foundational course will provides a base line understanding onto which participants can build with more advanced courses. |

This course provides a practical introduction to the writing of Python programs for the complete novice. Participants are lead through the core aspects of Python illustrated by a series of example programs. Upon completion of the course, attentive participants will be able to write simple Python programs and customize more complex code to fit their needs. Course materials are available here. Please note that the content of this course has recently been updated. This course now mostly focuses on core concepts including Python syntax, data structures and reading/writing files. Concepts and strategies for working more effectively with Python are now the focus of a new 2-days course, Data Science in Python. The training room is located on the first floor and there is currently no wheelchair or level access available to this level. CRUK: Data Carpentry in R

In many domains of research the rapid generation of large amounts of data is fundamentally changing how research is done. The deluge of data presents great opportunities, but also many challenges in managing, analyzing and sharing data. Data Carpentry workshops are designed to teach basic concepts, skills and tools for working more effectively with data, using a combination of tools with a main focus in R. The workshop is aimed at researchers in the life sciences at all career stages and is designed for learners with little to no prior knowledge of programming, shell scripting, or command line tools. Departmental health and safety induction for graduate students, undergraduate students (Part IB, II, or III) MASt students, visitors and staff starting study or work at the Department of Physics. Session 1 of this briefing is for everyone and covers what to do in the event of an emergency, and how to report problems. There will be a short break before Session 2, which is for people carrying out practical experiments in a laboratory, doing other practical (e.g. maintenance) work, managing events or other people. When there are new staff at an induction, this will be preceded by a short HR induction. Anyone only working in an office is not required to attend Session 2, unless they manage people or events. |

It’s that time of year: the report is looming on the horizon and the reality of writing is here! Aimed at first-year PhD students, with little or no academic writing experience. This course focuses on helping you develop good writing habits and become a more efficient writer. It is designed to get you thinking and to get working effectively on your end-of-first-year report / Certificate of Postgraduate Studies. Please note, this is a beginners course, so if you already have experience in writing for academic purposes, this course might not be for you.

Presenting is a crucial skill for researchers, yet it is often something that even experienced scholars struggle with. This interactive workshop is designed for people who already have some experience of presenting and the basic principles involved, but would like to develop their skills in this area to a higher level. This workshop provides the opportunity for practical experience of presenting within a supportive environment. During the workshop, you will be given time to design and deliver a short (5-10 minutes) presentation to a small audience comprised of your fellow researchers.

Many funders now require evidence of how researchers will manage the data they use and collect before funding is even released. Although this can seem like yet another piece of unnecessary paperwork, data management plans can actually make the research process much more efficient. This interactive session will encourage participants to think about the different elements of a plan and give them a chance to review existing plans to gather ideas they can use in their own work. |
This session is designed to introduce students to strategies to plan a revision timetable. It includes practical tips to help identify when and where you work best, strategies and techniques to stay focused, and a number of tools to block social media while revising. Memory tricks, making meaning, and chunking are all covered, as are exam day tips for the time before the exam, the day of the exam, and while in the exam. |

This workshop draws on insight gained from Postdocs: An Initial Guide to Leadership and Postdocs: Self-Leadership and considers how to apply different skills, strengths, and styles of leadership as well as the strategies of self-leadership to enable you to thoughtfully and self-assuredly lead others. This workshop will help you cultivate a more profound and extensive portfolio of leadership capabilities and a deeper understanding of how to motivate people and to get the best out of them. It is possible to attend this as an individual workshop, although we would recommend that you try to attend the series starting with Postdocs: An Initial Guide to Leadership and Postdocs: Self-Leadership.

Attendees will learn how to search medical/healthcare databases accessed with a Raven login (such as Medline and Embase) effectively and efficiently, to learn how to save searches and references, and to create and maintain a bibliography. This course is delivered at an introductory/refresher level, and assumes you have had no prior training in how to search databases. All attendees are required to have a Raven login.
