SCM STAFF: Mid Career Fellows Network Grant Writing Series: ERC with Toni Vidal-Puig New
The first of our grant writing series for the Mid-Career Fellows (MCF) at School of Clinical Medicine providing insights into what major funders look for in applications. This session will look specifically at European Research Council (ERC) Funding with a presentation from Professor Toni Vidal-Puig.
Attendees will have the chance to hear from and ask questions of experienced PIs who are, or have been, reviewers on major grant panels to share their experiences, tips, and guidance.
About the Speaker
Professor Toni Vidal-Puig
Professor Vidal-Puig is Professor of Molecular Nutrition and Metabolism at Cambridge University and Principal Investigator at the Medical Research Council Metabolic Diseases Unit (MRC MDU) and the Wellcome Sanger Institute.
Professor Vidal-Puig also serves as the Scientific Director of the Cambridge Phenomics Center, specializing in advanced murine metabolic phenotyping, and as an Honorary Consultant in Metabolic Medicine at Addenbrooke’s Hospital. The TVPLab, explores the molecular mechanisms linking obesity to insulin resistance, diabetes, and cardiometabolic complications, aiming to identify new therapeutic pathways.
Professor Vidal-Puig holds a MBA from Judge Business School and is on scientific advisory boards (SAB) for companies such as Novo Nordisk. His leadership extends globally through initiatives like the Cambridge-Príncipe Felipe Research Unit in Valencia and strategic collaborations in China and Singapore.
Antonio has shaped European biomedical research as Chair of the ERC LS4 Panel (2018–2023), fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation. He serves on advisory boards of top research institutions, including IDIBAPS and INCLIVA, guiding their strategic development. As a mentor, he has trained 18 Ph.D. students and 23 postdoctoral fellows, many of whom have advanced to prominent academic and industrial roles. His achievements are recognised with honours, including the British Endocrine Society Medal and the Hippocrates International Award for Nutrition Research.
