This course aims to give you an introduction to the basics of Matlab. During the two day course we will use a practical based approach to give you the confidence to start using Matlab in your own work. In particular we will show you how to write your own scripts and functions and how to use pre-written functions. We will also explore the many ways in which help is available to Matlab users. In addition we will cover basic computer programming in Matlab to enable you to write more efficient scripts.

Medicine: Systematic Literature Reviews - A 'How To' Guide (for University and NHS) Finished 10:00 - 12:00 Cambridge University Libraries Online

Before undertaking any piece of primary research it’s important to be aware of as much of the existing literature as possible. A systematic literature review can also be a research end in itself. And it’s not something to be taken lightly. But how can you be sure you’re being as rigorous as necessary? How can you manage the references you find, document the process, and also know when to stop searching?

This session assumes attendees have already had prior introductory training in literature searching. It is a prerequisite that you have attended either Introduction to Literature Searching (if you are a University of Cambridge staff member or student) or Getting the Best Results - Improving Your Database Searching (if you are an NHS staff member). Exceptions will be made if you received similar training from another department or university - please contact us if you have any questions about prerequisites.

Japanese: Beginner Intensive (3 of 9) Finished 11:00 - 13:00 CLIC online teaching

Introductory course to Japanese. This course is for those with no previous knowledge of Japanese. Communicative context, with videos, audio, texts and conversation.

This week-long training will focus on professional „branding“ outside of academia. The week will start with a first session introducing the importance of presenting yourself and your ideas in the right way to the stakeholders you are interested in connecting with professionally (cultural-creative, not-for-profit, policy, private audiences). The session will then delve into how to present your skills and your experience to position yourself credibly in a relevant field, whether on linkedin, through your cv and bio, or by ‘online’ networking. The second session will be specifically dedicated to thinking creatively about branding. It will provide participants with practical tips to building a ‘good-looking’ online profile (focusing specifically on constructing a website and cv) and merchandise (including business cards). At the end of the week, participants will also have the opportunity to participate in 30-minute mentorship sessions where participants will present the results of the work undertaken during the week to the trainers (whether a new plan for a website, a revised CV or linkedin profile) and will get the opportunity to receive direct feedback on their work in progress. Instructions will be circulated during the week.

This training will be co-led by Dr Alina Loth and Dr Maja Spanu. Alina is the Public Engagement and Impact Manager at Cambridge and a freelance research illustrator. Maja is a Junior Research Fellow in International Relations at Cambridge and postdoc lead for Humanities and Social Science for the university’s Public Engagement Advisory Group.

Course structure:

Session 1: Introductory Session ‘Branding - the why and how?’

Session 2: Thinking creatively about branding

Session 3 and 4: There will be 30 min time-slots on Thursday and Friday to present your work to the trainers and get individual mentoring, please note that you only have to attend one 30 min slot on the Thursday or Friday and do not have to be available for the remainder of the session!

The Programme offers general language tuition with a focus on communicative competence.

At intermediate 2 level the focus shifts slightly towards reading and writing whilst still offering plenty an opportunity for oral communication. The syllabus is more topical and the contents feature many a cultural, historical, political and current affairs theme. While the grammar is analysed within a context, explicit grammar instruction becomes an integral part of the course.

This course is suitable for students who have studied or picked up Spanish at basic level and who want to revise and progress onto intermediate topics and language and to discover Hispanic culture. The main focus is learning through communication and interaction. We will get together from home with Zoom, which offers us many possibilities to watch videos, listen to audio, read texts, write (there is even a whiteboard!) and especially speak in small and large groups. ¡Te esperamos!

What might your research project look like if it were presented as a video game? What rules would structure a board game based on your work? What toys could you make to encourage people to play with your key concepts? This session introduces the basics of game design and models a method for identifying the rules and mechanics that structure playful experiences. Using a series of case studies, we will examine the intersection between academic research and game design, and discuss how playful thinking can facilitate innovation, experimentation, and sustained engagement.

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is the most widely used personality instrument worldwide, based on over 50 years’ research and development.

It presents a framework for understanding how you operate, how others operate, and how you can use that understanding to get more from yourself and the relationships you have with others.

This workshop is led by a qualified MBTI practitioner and will involve taking the MBTI questionnaire, investigating the four areas of preference covered by MBTI, self-assessment of type with group exercises, looking at your best fit type and investigating how it could help you at work.

Learning about your personality type can help you to understand your role within your team and the role of others. It can also help you to cope with organisational change, deal with stress effectively and develop your emotional intelligence.

We’ll think about why we use posters to present our research, what makes the difference between a good and bad poster and some useful tips to help you present your data in style.

Come along to this session if you’d like to develop some practical tools to becoming a white ally and build a strong antiracist identity.

This is an interactive workshop, designed to help new staff learn more about the Cambridge University Library and meet some of the key people who work in it.

Staff will take part in some fun activities to learn more about other departments within the Cambridge University Libraries, have a presentation from a member of the Leadership Team about the wider workings of the University and have time to check their HR24 Induction Checklists and meet other new starters. Many funding bodies that support research undertaken at Cambridge require not only open access to any publications based on that research, but also to the data underlying it. This course will introduce graduate students, early-career researchers, and professionals in the humanities to the technologies of image recognition and machine vision, including recent developments in machine vision research in the past half-decade. The course will seek to combine a technical understanding of how machine vision systems work, with a detailed understanding of the possibilities they open to research and study in the humanities, and with a critical exploration of the social, political and ideological dimensions of machine vision.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, students should be able to:

  • Understand the basic tasks of machine vision, such as Image Classification, Object Detection, Image-to-Image Translation, Image Captioning, Image Segmentation etc.
  • Understand the fundamental technical operations of image processing and machine vision: the pixel encoding of images, Gaussian and convolutional filters,
  • Explore critical aspects of machine vision in a technically-informed way: e.g. the problems in algorithmic bias brought about by featureless convolutional networks
  • Develop and run their own simple machine vision and image processing pipelines, in a visual programming language compiling to Python
  • Understand the potential synergies and limitations of machine vision applications in humanities research and cultural heritage institutions
