Description

This session aims to provide an understanding of the prevalence, myths and stereotypes surrounding sexual violence as a background to learn the skills to appropriately respond to disclosures from students and others.

There will be a focus on the practicalities of dealing with someone in distress, what to do in the event of being a first point of disclosure, what questions to ask and what to record. The session will also discuss how to think about risk and will provide an outline of the support and the University and police reporting options available.

Target audience

This session is aimed at any University or College staff in student-facing roles, to whom students may choose to make an initial disclosure; as well as those who have responsibility for responding to disclosures or student welfare.

Aims

To understand the prevalence of sexual violence; To understand how myths and stereotypes impact on how we respond to disclosures; To understand how to respond to a disclosure of abuse or sexual violence, including those who are in distress; To be able to record disclosures in line with best practice; To understand reporting options available to a student; To be able to provide complainant or respondent students with appropriate information and direct them to support available.

A single, three hour, face-to-face session, with a short break part-way through.
