This course will enable the participants to practice existing spreadsheet skills and develop more advanced skills within the context of UFS data. There will be the opportunity to extract data from the system and learn to manipulate, analyse and use it for reporting purposes. The course runs over two sessions and participants will need to attend both of these sessions. |

PLEASE NOTE The Bioinformatics Team are presently teaching as many courses live online. We aim to simulate the classroom experience as closely as possible, with opportunities for one-to-one discussion with tutors and a focus on interactivity throughout. Data analyses usually entail the application of many command line tools or scripts to transform, filter, aggregate or plot data and results. With ever increasing amounts of data being collected in science, reproducible and scalable automatic workflow management becomes increasingly important. The Snakemake workflow management system is a tool to create reproducible and scalable data analyses. Workflows are described via a human readable, Python based language. They can be seamlessly scaled to server, cluster, grid and cloud environments, without the need to modify the workflow definition. Finally, Snakemake workflows can entail a description of required software, which will be automatically deployed to any execution environment. With over 200k downloads on Bioconda, and on average 6 new citations per week, Snakemake is a widely used and accepted standard for reproducible data science that has powered numerous high impact publications. This 1-day workshop will teach how to use Snakemake for reproducible data analysis. Using close reading and translation of academic texts from their particular discipline, this weekly class is intended to help research students in the Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences to develop their skills in reading French documents that they have come across or may meet in their research. The course aims to develop strategies for reading longer texts faster through close analysis, grammatical and stylistic commentary, and translation. For example, literary texts with differing editions, stories with two or more translations into English that need to be compared and evaluated, poems of challenging originality or range of allusion. Most postgraduate researchers benefit from giving presentations about their research by gaining feedback, sharing their ideas and/or findings, and raising their profile in the research community. Therefore, learning how to present your research effectively is an important skill to develop during the course of your doctorate. |

This online course is geared towards non-native speakers who feel that they would benefit from the opportunity to have frequent practice in giving presentations in English. It will consist of a mix of teacher input, individual presentations and regular feedback. We will meet together for the first class (11.15am on Wednesday 28 April), and thereafter we will meet mainly in small groups of 4-6 students, at 11.15 am on either Wednesday or Thursday mornings. Depending on exact numbers, each group session will be between 1 hour and 1.5 hours long. Groups and precise times will be decided in the first class.

Please note that the Conversation Hours will be delivered online This conversation hour offers learners with an independent conversational ability (B2 level upwards) a chance to practise speaking French with others in a relaxed and informal group led by a native-speaker facilitator. The content of the sessions is decided by the participants, with members taking turns to propose a topic and source materials (newspaper articles, web-links, videos etc.) to use as a basis for discussion. The groups are ideal for those who wish to retain or improve upon the language skills they already have or for those studying for a language degree who would like another forum for interaction at advanced level. While the ‘imposter syndrome’ has been somewhat trivialised in social media recently, the impostor phenomenon (as it is more correctly known) is of key concern to those in higher education. Initiatives aimed at broadening participation of under-represented groups (e.g. women in STEM, first in family, BAME students) will be less than successful unless ‘feelings of intellectual fraudulence’ associated with ‘otherness’ is addressed and diminished. This of course, relates to both staff and students. This introductory workshop, delivered by Dr Theresa Simpkin, aims to highlight the implications of impostor phenomenon in the higher education setting, highlighting how the often debilitating experience can adversely affect achievement, engagement and learning experiences on campus and into the workplace. The workshop also introduces some responses that may assist faculty and support services to address the experience faced by many students and staff alike. This event is hosted and provided by the University of Cambridge Women’s Staff Network and is open to member and non-members Dr Theresa (Terri) Simpkin BBA (HRM), BCom (Hons), PhD, PGCert(HE), MCIPD, CPHR, Churchill Fellow Terri Simpkin is an industry experienced academic, educator, researcher, public speaker and an authority on the impostor phenomenon. Terri is an Associate Professor and Head of MBA Programmes (Int’l) at the University of Nottingham and a Visiting Fellow at Anglia Ruskin University. Her current research interest has developed into ‘Braver Stronger Smarter’ – a suite of initiatives designed to address personal and structural issues leading to workplace inequity and the under-representation of women in leadership, STEM occupations and higher education. As CEO of her own company, Mischief Business Engineering, she has worked globally with governments, industry associations, large and small business and is an accomplished international academic manager. |

RD Live: Teamwork

Research is increasingly collaborative and multidisciplinary, meaning that teamwork is critical. Teamwork is also frequently listed as one of the top skills employers are looking for when recruiting. However, most of the educational pathway, even as far as the PhD, is based on individual work and most early career researchers lack team working experience. In this session we will look at some of the theories and myths behind team working, and how a better understanding of yourself, including the recognition and acceptance of your strengths and weaknesses, can lead to you maximising your contribution in teams. We will also discuss the impact of remote working on teams. This session will be delivered by Dr Geraint Wyn Story. Geraint is director of Cambridge Training Associates Ltd, who has worked with many organisations across the world to improve their team working. He is also an associate of Belbin Associates, which is an internationally recognised tool for improving team work. Geraint did his PhD in molecular plant biology in Cambridge, before managing a research team for a small biotech company. He then changed career direction and was the Researcher Development Consultant for the life sciences at Cambridge for six years before starting his own company in 2015. |

This optional online drop-in session is a chance for students undertaking their Preparing for Patients project to ask questions about, and gain further support in literature searching, critical appraisal and evaluation of medical research, and referencing. Please note that the Conversation Hours will be delivered online This conversation hour offers learners with a lower-intermediate conversational ability (A2/B1 level upwards) a chance to improve their speaking skills with others in a relaxed and informal setting led by a native-speaker facilitator. Come along and take it in turns to choose a conversation topic of personal interest each week. This could be one that's familiar to you but you want to practise more. Devise 4-5 questions to get the conversation started. Example topics could be holidays, food, traditions or hobbies. Receive feedback on your pronunciation and accuracy, and try stretching yourself further. Suitable for those who completed Arabic Elementary 1 and 2 Culp courses or those who have a B1 level in the CEFR.
