We offer expert, impartial advice relating all things process improvement and want to support our colleagues on their own continuous improvement journeys. Please note, these sessions are informal, 1-2-1 meetings where colleagues can ask for advice and guidance from the Simplifying our Processes team. These are not workshops or taught sessions. The Simplifying our Processes team will be available 9-10 and 4-5 every Tuesday and Friday - each hour can be split into two sessions of 30 minutes depending on demand. |

High-throughput data analyses usually involve many data processing steps, including the use of a range of command line tools and scripts to transform, filter, aggregate and visualise data. Each tool may require a specific set of inputs and options to be defined and, as we chain multiple tools together, this can become challenging to manage. As analyses pipelines become more complex and with the ever-increasing amounts of data being collected in research, reproducible and scalable automatic workflow management becomes increasingly important. The Snakemake workflow management system is a tool to create reproducible and scalable data analyses pipelines/workflows. Workflows are described via a human-readable, Python-based language. They can be seamlessly scaled to server, cluster, grid and cloud environments, without the need to modify the workflow definition. Finally, Snakemake workflows can entail a description of the required software, which will be automatically deployed to any execution environment. With over 500k downloads on Bioconda, and over 2k citations, Snakemake is a widely used and accepted standard for reproducible data science that has powered numerous research goals and publications. This 1-day workshop will cover the principles for building workflows using Snakemake, as well as more advanced strategies to fully customise, automate and scale your analysis. The training room is located on the first floor and there is currently no wheelchair or level access available to this level. The team will be available every week, each mentor offering two sessions of 30 minutes in the day and time indicated above. We will release new slots in the same days and times a couple of months in advance. Please book for the day and time you would like to attend, and you will receive closer to the session the Teams link to meet with the mentor. Virtual - Cognos Introduction

Cognos is a reporting tool that utilises data from CUFS to provide users with additional reports and options. This introductory course is designed for new reporters - covering everything from running a report successfully as well as a number of useful tips and shortcuts. Note: This course is mandatory in order to attend either of the following two courses below. What this introductory course does not do is go through in detail the outputs of each individual report. Report outputs are explained in further detail in the courses above. Cannot make any dates? See the on-demand online version of the course. Completion of this course will count as Cognos attendance for the purpose of acceptance onto the above courses. With ever developing complexities in the UK’s immigration system, Graeme Ross, the University’s Head of Immigration for staff matters, conducts termly briefing sessions for non-UK postdocs holding UK visas. These commonly cover the ‘basic’ work visas, such as Skilled Worker and Global Talent, and how to switch into or extend these in order to remain in the UK. However additional guidance on applications for dependents and Indefinite Leave to Remain/Settlement is also covered. There will be an opportunity to ask questions about other immigration matters; not all of these may be answered on the day but would be followed up individually as needed. |

This class is intended to help research students in the Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences to develop their skills in reading German documents they need to deal with in their research. Each session will be divided into two parts: The first part will consist of grammar, tasks to develop insight into the reading process, help with dealing with complex sentence structures, academic conventions, abbreviations, etc. The second part will be devoted to the translation of original German texts from different periods and covering a range of topics. Each week you will be asked to attempt a translation into English of a German passage. Students will be encouraged to bring along German texts from their own research to translate. At intermediate 2 level the focus shifts slightly towards reading and writing whilst still offering plenty an opportunity for oral communication. The syllabus is more topical and the contents feature many a cultural, historical, political and current affairs theme.
