Core Statistics using R (ONLINE LIVE TRAINING) (2 of 3) Finished 09:30 - 17:30 Bioinformatics Training Facility - Online LIVE Training

The Bioinformatics Team are presently teaching this course live online, with tutors available to help you throughout if have any questions. We continue to monitor advice from the UK government and the University of Cambridge on resuming in-person teaching in our training room.

This award winning virtually delivered course is intended to provide a strong foundation in practical statistics and data analysis using the R software environment. The underlying philosophy of the course is to treat statistics as a practical skill rather than as a theoretical subject and as such the course focuses on methods for addressing real-life issues in the biological sciences.

There are three core goals for this course:

  1. Use R confidently for statistics and data analysis
  2. Be able to analyse datasets using standard statistical techniques
  3. Know which tests are and are not appropriate

R is an open source programming language so all of the software we will use in the course is free.

In this course, we explore classical statistical analysis techniques starting with simple hypothesis testing and building up to linear models and power analyses. The focus of the course is on practical implementation of these techniques and developing robust statistical analysis skills rather than on the underlying statistical theory.

After the course you should feel confident to be able to select and implement common statistical techniques using R and moreover know when, and when not, to apply these techniques.

Note: This course is mandatory in order to attend either of the following two courses below.

What this introductory course does not do is go through in detail the outputs of each individual report. Report outputs are explained in further detail in the courses above.

Managing Your Data (Engineering MPhil Energy Technology / Nuclear Energy) Finished 10:00 - 11:00 Cambridge University Libraries Online

There is an increased emphasis on managing and sharing data produced in research. Many of the research funders supporting work at the University of Cambridge require that research data are openly available with as few restrictions as possible.

Research data management is a complex issue, but done correctly from the start, could save you a lot of time and hassle at the end of the project; when preparing your data for a publication or writing up your thesis. Research data takes many forms, ranging from measurements, numbers and images to documents and publications.

This module aims to help you get started with managing your data by introducing you to key principles around organising, storing, archiving and sharing your data. You will also learn how to create your own Data Management Plan.

The ourcambridge Supporting our Staff team have developed this session, to provide a follow up to the very popular ‘What do you value in life?’ workshop. In the first session, participants identified their own personal values and considered what they might mean for how they lived their life and went about their work. In this follow up session, participants will reflect further on their personal values and participate in some exercises that will help them to identify further positive actions they can take to achieve closer alignment to their values in a supportive and motivating environment.

Anyone who is a first-time user of unsealed radioactive substances is expected to attend this acquaintanceship course before they begin the work. Users of radioactive substances who are new to the University should also attend. This course also acts as a refresher for experienced users and for users from other institutions or countries. There will be time for discussion and questions at the end of the session. You will be required to complete a short quiz after the course to confirm your understanding of core aspects of radiation safety.

This module introduces the use of R, a free programming language originally developed for statistical data analysis. In this course, we will use R through R Studio, a user-friendly interface. Students will learn:

  • Ways of reading data into R
  • How to manipulate data in major data types
  • How to draw basic graphs and figures with R
  • How to summarise data using descriptive statistics
  • How to perform basic inferential statistics

This course prepares you to supervise undergraduate students at the University of Cambridge in AHSS subjects. It explores the challenges and approaches involved in supervising undergraduates as well as providing practical advice and strategies.

The course consists of three components:

1. A pre-workshop self-paced module containing information on the Cambridge supervision system and introduces the principles and practices of effective teaching.
2. A live online workshop that incorporates personal reflection on teaching practice, discussion of real teaching scenarios, a chance to discuss and ask questions and access to practical information about organising and carrying out your supervisions.
3. A post-workshop information pack containing additional resources for ongoing support and information

The training provided in this course complements any training you may receive from your department or college and is required by colleges before you can carry out supervisions.

A microbiological safety cabinet (MSC) is a vital piece of equipment that helps to prevent exposure to biological hazards. All containment laboratory users and their supervisors should know how to use MSCs effectively, what the standards are for the different levels of containment, and how the facilities are managed. This course will help both users and managers understand their responsibilities in creating a safe working area and provide both theory and practical knowledge on the safe and effective use of tissue culture (Class II) cabinets.

This course will help you understand how to critically evaluate medical research articles, with a particular emphasis on evaluating the reliability, trustworthiness, and applicability of an article in informing evidence-based practice and decision-making in a healthcare context.

PLEASE NOTE: This course is PRIMARILY FOR CLASSICISTS.

This weekly class is intended to help research students in the Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences to develop their skills in reading German documents they need to deal with in their research. Each session will be divided into two parts:

The first part will consist of grammar, tasks to develop insight into the reading process, help with dealing with complex sentence structures, academic conventions, abbreviations, etc.

The second part will be devoted to the translation of original German texts from different periods and covering a range of topics. Each week you will be asked to attempt a translation into English of a German passage. Students will be encouraged to bring along German texts from their own research to translate.

The Programme offers general language tuition with a focus on communicative competence.

At intermediate 2 level, the focus shifts slightly towards reading and writing whilst still offering plenty an opportunity for oral communication. The syllabus is more topical and the contents feature many a cultural, historical, political and current affairs theme. While the grammar is analysed within a context, explicit grammar instruction becomes an integral part of the course.

Diversity has well been established as a key driver of creative solutions, innovations, and superior business performance. Creating inclusive workplaces to harness the power of diversity takes knowledge, experience, and open-mindedness. However, our biases often influence our decision-making without us even realising. The good news is that biases - towards genders, cultures, ethnicities, sexual orientations and so on - are learnt, and therefore can be unlearnt.

This event is for postdocs near the mid-point of their current contract at Cambridge. The deadline for registering is 12th January 2022.

The session has been designed specifically for postdocs at this key career stage and the aim is help you to position yourself for the next stage of your career (in academia or otherwise). The session provides an opportunity for you to reflect on your professional development activities so far and share experiences with others at a similar stage. The session will include information, guidance and tools to support and empower you in your next steps by focusing on future goals and how you can use the remainder of your time to work towards them.  

This interactive online session will be broken down into 3 sections: 

1. Reflecting on your professional development activities to date and identifying further development you would like to achieve during the rest of your contract.

2. Sharing ideas of how to achieve your development goals with other mid-contract postdocs whilst focusing on key professional development topics specific for postdocs and sources of information, advice and support across the university.

3. Gaining tools to start action planning to ensure you know when and how to take the next steps during the remaining time as a postdoc.

These 3 sections will be covered in the first hour of the session. The final half hour will be open for those who wish to ask related questions and engage in informal discussion with the facilitators and other participants.

This module introduces the use of R, a free programming language originally developed for statistical data analysis. In this course, we will use R through R Studio, a user-friendly interface. Students will learn:

Doing data collection in the time of COVID-19 has required the adaptation of existing approaches. While face-to-face data collection is not feasible during the COVID-19 crisis, phone- and internet-based interviews offer an alternative means of collecting primary data. In this workshop, we discus key practical and ethical issues concerning virtual approaches to data collection. We provide practical examples drawing on two related research projects that took place in a lower-middle income context during the Covid-19 school closures.

The classes are going to be conducted primarily in English, even though there will be plenty of opportunity for oral and listening practice. The courses feature a listening and speaking component as to prepare student to conduct field work in Portuguese.

The Basic course does not require any knowledge of the language while the prerequisite for the Intermediate course is a CEFR A2 level. The courses offer the possibility of progression and Basic students are strongly encouraged to continue with the Intermediate course.

Please note that these courses are attended by a number of very able, Spanish speaking students of Latin American studies and that the class dynamics are likely to be fast paced. For the rest of the students this might be challenging but also very rewarding and conducive to sound progress.

The courses will start from a Basic level and will aim at:
