This session brings together ‘Writing your first-year report’ with a dedicated time and space for getting started with actually writing that report. The first two hours will focus on equipping you with the essential skills to excel in preparing your First Year Report, specifically by looking at:
The second half of the session will run as a writing retreat, wrapping up at 4pm. The retreat half will be structured according to your ‘writing objectives’ which you will develop with the course lead. |

Virtual Writing Retreats

Do you have a deadline coming up or a piece of writing that’s long overdue? Or maybe some data analysis that keeps slipping to the bottom of your to-do list? Our online retreats give you time, peace, and space to think and write. Each session will provide a friendly and constructive environment in which to meet like-minded peers, discuss challenges, and work in a focused way using the Pomodoro technique. These virtual retreats are being hosted collaboratively across several institutions to encourage researchers across career stages and institutions to come together in a sustainable writing environment. The retreats will take place several times per month throughout the academic year and you can attend as many as you like (within booking limits for each session). Are you organising an event with a larger audience, and considering using Teams? Webinars are ideal for business and educational purposes, such as training sessions, demonstrations, virtual conferences, and academic lectures. Confused over the various types of webinars? You may be aware of Live Events (soon to be updated to Town Halls) as an alternative to this course on Webinars; Live Events have a more structured delivery style and require an individual to take the role of producer to advance the next slide. Webinars are similar to a Teams meeting and are more intuitive to use. Teams Webinars typically involve a combination of audio and visual elements where the presenters share their video feed, give presentations, or other multimedia content, while participants can ask questions, provide feedback, and participate in discussions through chat, Q&A or other interactive features such as breakout rooms. This course will give you the opportunity to learn how to mitigate technical problems on the day, and to practise managing your content before you go live! Both organisers and presenters will find this course useful.

‘Student Mental Health Essentials’ is a focused introductory guide to student mental health tailored to the Cambridge context. The programme has been developed with Academic Departments, for Academic Departments, and is led by trainers from the University’s Student Wellbeing Service. The session offers essential information and practical guidance relevant to the roles of academic and professional staff at Faculties and Departments and offers opportunities for discussion and analysis of authentic case studies with colleagues. This week-long course is aimed at people with little or no experience using statistical analyses in research. It introduces participants to core concepts in statistics and experimental design, aimed at ensuring that the resulting data is able to address the research question using appropriate statistical methods. The interactive course gives participants a hands-on, applied foundation in statistical data analysis and experimental design. Group exercises and discussions are combined with short lectures that introduce key theoretical concepts. Computational methods are used throughout the course, using the R programming language. Formative assessment exercises allow participants to test their understanding throughout the course and encourage questions and critical thinking. By the end of the course participants will be able to critically evaluate and design effective research questions, linking experimental design concepts to subsequent statistical analyses. It will allow participants to make informed decisions on which statistical tests are most appropriate to their research questions. The course will provide a solid grounding for further development of applied statistical competencies.

During change we often focus on what will be delivered and if it will be right for the job, but we often focus less on the need to support, reassure, and motivate those impacted by change – the people side of change. This short session for staff with people-management responsibilities (including PIs, supervisors and team leads) will explore approaches to the people side of change in the context of the University. Whilst high-level sponsorship provides senior leadership and the rationale for change, research shows that direct line managers have the most influence on how their team respond to change by helping to support people in understanding, preparing for, and adopting changes in working life and practice. “Change happens one person at a time.” Prosci.com.
