Machine learning gives computers the ability to learn without being explicitly programmed. It encompasses a broad range of approaches to data analysis with applicability across the biological sciences. Lectures will introduce commonly used algorithms and provide insight into their theoretical underpinnings. In the practicals students will apply these algorithms to real biological data-sets using the R language and environment. Convenor: Tom Kissock (CDH Methods Fellow) This Methods Workshop will offer Video Data Analysis for Social Science and Humanities students. It’s a relatively new, broad, and innovative multi-disciplinary methodology that helps students understand how video fits into modern research both inside and outside academia. For example, Cisco has estimated that video will make up 80% of internet traffic and 17.1% of it will be live video which is a 15-fold increase since 2017; therefore, it’s a tool that cannot be overlooked when conducting research. Tom will address how to use video ethically, for example:

Tom will also plans to include a lesson focussed on viewing livestreams in a reflexive manner as this is a huge topic in the TikTok era About the convenor: Tom has fifteen years’ experience as a Director, Executive Producer, and Livestream expert for the BBC, YouTube, NBC, and Cisco; coupled with seven years’ experience researching video witnessing and human rights abuses. In 2020 he received his MSc in Globalization and Latin American Development from UCL where his research used Video Data Analysis as a research methodology. He tracked how populist politicians in Brazil built misinformation campaigns by strategically cross-sharing videos to avoid journalistic questioning as a symbolic accountability mechanism during the 2018 presidential elections. His PhD in Sociology at the University of Cambridge is a loose extension of his MSc, but explores positive aspects of streaming advocacy, such as how Indigenous video activists in Brazil use live video on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Kwai to reach audiences to discuss climate change, the environment, and land rights. He is interested in how video can produce knowledge and, subsequently how societies value different knowledge through the process of video witnessing. In his spare time, he serves as the Executive Producer of Declarations: Human Rights Podcast (part of Cambridge’s Centre for Governance and Human Rights), has given lectures on live streaming and human rights at MIT, UCL, and the University of Essex, and has written pieces for LatAM Dialogue and the Latin American Bureau. |

There is an increasing emphasis in research on the management and sharing of data. Many funding bodies that support research undertaken at Cambridge require not only open access to any publications based on that research, but also to the data underlying it. This course will help you understand funders’ requirements for management and sharing of research data, and will provide opportunities to create your own data management plan and test out resources that will make the data management process easier. Engaged Researcher Training: Co-creation with non-academic partners: future-proofing your project

In this session we’ll explore some of the future proofing you can undertake to ensure a lasting impact from co-created work derived from public engagement and impact projects. There are many good reasons to identify likeminded collaborators from civil society, business and industry, policy, third sector organisations, and communities affected by or with expertise in your areas of research, and to engage them in designing public engagement and impact strategies. But how can you future-proof these relationships so that everyone is fairly represented, and so that all parties can benefit from the opportunities of the collaboration. We’ll talk about how to have early conversations with co-creation partners around funding, intellectual property, copyright and attribution, and the roles and responsibilities of collaborators and participants. We’ll focus throughout on how to create and agree future impact pathways which could include open/creative commons or commercial licensing of tools, media or other co-created assets; social entrepreneurship and activism; ongoing research, public engagement and impact partnerships. The aim is to give you confidence at the outset of collaborative public engagement projects, and to make sure you understand where to get help within the University. Emma is Commercialisation Manager for Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at Cambridge Enterprise. Her academic background is in literature and theology, and she has been involved in social innovation and heritage outside of the university. She works to support a wide-ranging portfolio of impact and engagement projects coming out of Cambridge AHSS research; including social enterprise; creative industry collaborations; software, media and data licensing; and consultancies. |

In January 2021 the government launched a new immigration system applicable to new arrivals of EU and non-EU nationals on an equal basis. The new system is loosely based on the previous immigration system (Tier 2 etc.), but with some changes. The course will outline the two key visa routes used by the University in its recruitment of international staff – the Skilled Worker Visa and the Global Talent Visa. The aim of this course is to help those involved with recruitment and selection to navigate the rules which regulate the recruitment of individuals via these two visa routes, whilst ensuring full compliance. Please note that this session will be recorded and details will follow after the session. |

The Fire Safety Awareness section (classroom based) will raise attendees' awareness of fire safety and assist fire safety managers to comply with current fire safety legislation. Use of Fire Extinguishers training (outdoor practical) provides hands on experience in the correct use of portable fire extinguishers. University staff working in embedded accommodation at Addenbrooke's Hospital should attend the NHS' fire training for its tenants. This will cover general fire safety awareness specific to the main hospital. (See related courses below for further details.) |

Greek is an Indo-European language and the only member of the Hellenic branch; it has been spoken in South-East Europe since early in the second millennium BC and has the longest recorded history of any Indo-European language. Ancient Greek, spanning from c. 1500 BC to 1600 AD and Modern Greek (c.1700 to the present) are two major developmental stages in the long history of the language. Modern Greek is spoken by some 14 million people mainly in the Republic of Greece, where it is the official language and the Republic of Cyprus as one of the two official languages. It is also spoken by sizeable immigrant communities in the USA, Australia, Western Europe and elsewhere. Since 1981 is has been one of the official languages of the European Union as well.
