Have you heard about High Performance Computing, but are not sure what it is or whether it is relevant for your work? Would you like to use a HPC, but are not sure where to start? Are you using your personal computer to run computationally demanding tasks, which take long and slow down your work? Do you need to use software that runs on Linux, but don't have access to a Linux computer? If any of these questions apply to you, then this course might be for you!

Knowing how to work on a High Performance Computing system is an essential skill for applications such as bioinformatics, big-data analysis, image processing, machine learning, parallelising tasks, and other high-throughput applications.

In this course we will cover the basics of High Performance Computing, what it is and how you can use it in practice. This is a hands-on workshop, which should be accessible to researchers from a range of backgrounds and offering several opportunities to practice the skills we learn along the way.

As an optional session for those interested, we will also introduce the (free) HPC facilities available at Cambridge University (the course is not otherwise Cambridge-specific).

Want to practice giving Teams Live Events? Then join us in this informal introductory session to manage and deliver a webinar. The course is not about presentation skills, it is to master the mechanics of managing the smooth transition between different presenters and content. The maximum number of participants for this course is limited to 2.

You must have the following items installed or available on your computer to participate:

1. The Teams desktop app installed on your computer.
2. The Teams Calendar available on the Teams interface. (You must be using Microsoft Exchange Online for your email to enable the Teams Calendar). Details on how to migrate from Hermes to Exchange can be found here.
3. The button on the Teams Calendar interface necessary to create a Teams Live Event. (To enable the button on your system you need to request the ability to create Live Events via the Self Service portal). Note! this can take up to 48 hours for the change to come into effect.

This course provides an introduction to the management and analysis of qualitative data using Atlas.ti. It is divided between pre-recorded lectures, in which you’ll learn the relevant strategies and techniques, and hands-on live practical sessions in Zoom, in which you will learn how to analyse qualitative data using the software.

In this webinar, we will explore three approaches to better manage your workload by being able to:

• Challenge or ‘push back’ taking on additional work
• Negotiate how new workload is managed
• Say no when requested to engage in additional work that we cannot or do not want to take on

Saying ‘no’ becomes a necessary professional skill to support consistency and quality of your research outputs whilst taking care of your wellbeing. However, it is not always possible, hence being in quote marks.

This training will explore the options to avoid ‘just saying yes’. With plenty of time for questions and discussion on the practicalities how to implement the three approaches introduced.

This module is for students who don’t plan to use quantitative methods in their own research, but who need to be able to read and understand published research using quantitative methods. You will learn how to interpret graphs, frequency tables and multivariate regression results, and to ask intelligent questions about sampling, methods and statistical inference. The module is aimed at complete beginners, with no prior knowledge of statistics or quantitative methods.

The “Networking and Profile Building” virtual workshop series was created as a collaboration between Queen’s University Belfast, Queen Mary University London, University of Cambridge, King’s College London, University of Nottingham, Imperial College London, University of Glasgow and University of Cardiff. Participants will learn effective tools for successfully growing and nurturing their networks and will have the opportunity to put their skills into practice with researchers from the above listed universities, as well as with a number of other guest professionals, as part of the training.

This module is an introduction to ethnographic fieldwork and analysis and is intended for students in fields other than anthropology. It provides an introduction to contemporary debates in ethnography, and an outline of how selected methods may be used in ethnographic study.

The ethnographic method was originally developed in the field of social anthropology, but has grown in popularity across several disciplines, including sociology, geography, criminology, education and organization studies.

Ethnographic research is a largely qualitative method, based upon participant observation among small samples of people for extended periods. A community of research participants might be defined on the basis of ethnicity, geography, language, social class, or on the basis of membership of a group or organization. An ethnographer aims to engage closely with the culture and experiences of their research participants, to produce a holistic analysis of their fieldsite.

Session 1: The Ethnographic Method What is ethnography? Can ethnographic research and writing be objective? How does one conduct ethnographic research responsibly and ethically?

Session 2: Visual Anthropology This session outlines the relation of ethnographic film to anthropology and ethnographic knowledge generally, looks at some examples of contemporary ethnographic film practice, and inquires into the possible utility of photography and video recording in the research process of ethnographic fieldwork in general. We continue the prior session’s consideration of some of the epistemological, theoretical, social, and ethical considerations that tend to arise around use of these audiovisual recording technologies in anthropological fieldwork and analysis.

Session 3: Ethnography and/as Audio Shortly after the phonograph was invented, ethnographers began using audio recording to document the cultural practices they were researching. For some, it has served as a kind of scientific tool to gather evidence and generate archives of linguistic, musical, and other sonic practices; for many others, it has served as an essential tool for interviewing about any topic; and for other still, audio recording and re-composition offer new possibilities of what ‘writing culture’ means. What are the consequences of using audio recording in fieldwork? And what are the technical, ethical, and aesthetic dimensions of doing so?

Session 4: Relationships in the Field Ethnographic methodology and participant observation often involve researchers’ positioning in existing networks of social relations. This session is meant to help attendees manage interpersonal relationships with research participants from academic, political, and ethical perspectives. We will discuss when and why relationships in ethnographic fieldwork can be a reason for concern. We will reflect on the social distinctions that emerge when doing fieldwork with other people and their effects on researchers’ decision-making process. Finally, we will think through different fieldwork strategies when working with others, and how they impact the production of ethnographic knowledge.

This course is designed for students and staff of the Judge Business School at Cambridge University, who have no prior or have little knowledge of Mandarin Chinese but wish to learn to communicate with native Chinese speakers in business settings.

For the language elements, the course is focused on key business communications in four areas: Present yourself and your business; establish business relations; business work and travel; and promote your business.

Another element of the course is to equip students to communicate effectively in the Chinese business context, through gaining a good understanding of Chinese company culture through industry case studies.

These Portuguese reading courses are designed for researchers, graduate students and staff who have a particular interest in Latin American, Brazilian, Portuguese or Lusophone language, culture and heritage.

They offer linguistic tools that will enable students to comprehend complex texts and produce critical readings and interpretations.

The classes are going to be conducted primarily in English, even though there will be plenty of opportunity for oral and listening practice. The courses feature a listening and speaking component as to prepare student to conduct field work in Portuguese.

The Basic course does not require any knowledge of the language while the prerequisite for the Intermediate course is a CEFR A2 level. The courses offer the possibility of progression and Basic students are strongly encouraged to continue with the Intermediate course.

Please note that these courses are attended by a number of very able, Spanish speaking students of Latin American studies and that the class dynamics are likely to be fast paced. For the rest of the students this might be challenging but also very rewarding and conducive to sound progress.

The courses will start from a Basic level and will aim at:

• Solidifying strategies of reading of academic texts;
• Recognition of the compositional structures of the texts;
• Recognition of basic use of Portuguese grammar units The students will be asked to perform weekly readings of a wide variety of texts.

The concept underpinning this course is one of fostering the learning of higher Advanced German language through listening (mainly films), reading (mainly literature), speaking and writing (both film and literature).

Every session will offer a choice of extracts either from the German* literary canon or from critically acclaimed films, or indeed both, which illustrate the session’s theme.
