A series of 30 minute drop-in sessions to talk with one of the Simplifying our Processes team. We offer expert, impartial advice relating all things process improvement and want to support our colleagues on their own continuous improvement journeys.

Please note, these sessions are informal, 1-2-1 meetings where colleagues can ask for advice and guidance from the Simplifying our Processes team. These are not workshops or taught sessions.

The Simplifying our Processes team will be available 9-10 and 4-5 every Tuesday and Friday - each hour can be split into two sessions of 30 minutes depending on demand.

An Introduction to Solving Biological Problems with Python (ONLINE LIVE TRAINING) (2 of 2) Finished 09:30 - 17:30 Bioinformatics Training Facility - Online LIVE Training

PLEASE NOTE The Bioinformatics Team are presently teaching as many courses live online, with tutors available to help you work through the course material on a personal copy of the course environment. We aim to simulate the classroom experience as closely as possible, with opportunities for one-to-one discussion with tutors and a focus on interactivity throughout.

This course provides a practical introduction to the writing of Python programs for the complete novice. Participants are lead through the core aspects of Python illustrated by a series of example programs. Upon completion of the course, attentive participants will be able to write simple Python programs and customize more complex code to fit their needs.

Please note that the content of this course has recently been updated. This course now mostly focuses on core concepts including Python syntax, data structures and reading/writing files. Concepts and strategies for working more effectively with Python are now the focus of a new 2-days course, Data Science in Python.

Engaged Researcher Online - Communicating And Collaborating Using Improv new (3 of 4) Finished 10:00 - 12:00 Phoenix 2, Phoenix Building, New Museums Site

Improvised comedy, better known simply as “improv”, describes a wide variety of theatrical forms which all share the key characteristic that content, scenes, and characters are creating spontaneously by the performers. Successful improvisors embody a set of core skills, summarized by the phrase “Yes, and…”, which can be readily taught and learnt, and which can be used by practicing scientists and science communicators to provide a framework for more effective communication and collaboration. Although born in very different contexts, improv’s core skills embody the values underpinning the shift to more participatory and dialogic forms of public engagement in the UK in recent decades.

This training is an unashamedly entertaining and enjoyable introduction to improv for scientists hoping to do better when undertaking challenging intellectual tasks in front of others and when interacting with others when you wish to be—and wish to be seen to be—responsive to their perspectives and opinions. The training is not about being funny or making people laugh, but is instead about the underlying skills which lead to successful improv, and no one should be put off for a fear of “not being funny enough”.

As a highly interactive training, everyone must be minimally comfortable talking in front of others in order to get the most out of the course.

The University has made a commitment to establish and implement a University-wide Environmental Management System (EMS) in line with the international standard ISO 14001:2015.

We have been working with a consultant, Karen Gallagher, to develop the EMS. Work has been slowed by the Covid-19 pandemic but this year we hope to push forward with establishing the EMS. This will involve, amongst other things, understanding what processes and procedures we already have in place and signposting to these from the EMS; duty of care and compliance training for relevant operational staff; the continuation of internal audits tackling our areas of high risk first; and checking the competency of staff that have a role in the EMS and identifying any gaps in training needs.

Postdocs: Researcher Development & Support (one-to-one sessions)

The postdoc RD team are offering one-to-one meetings online for all postdocs. These meetings will be tailored to your individual needs and provide an opportunity to consider and discuss a variety of topics relating to learning, skills and personal development. This is not an exhaustive list but areas for discussion could include:

  • Managing your time whilst working from home
  • Collaborating effectively
  • Maintaining resilience and coping strategies
  • Reflecting on and identifying your key areas for development

Each meeting will last for up to 45 minutes and, given the present circumstances relating to Covid-19, will be conducted online using Teams.

Breakout Rooms are released! Join us for this 1 hour workshop to learn how to get hands on creating and managing breakout rooms in your Teams meetings. Please note that to participate you must have Teams installed on your computer and ideally have access to the calendar to create a Teams Meeting ('Meet now' can be used otherwise).

If you book:

  • Add the event to your calendar by following the link in your booking confirmation email and click Add to Calendar.
  • Install the Microsoft Teams app. (It is possible to join using Edge or Chrome but there is less functionality when using a browser).
  • Important: The instructor cannot troubleshoot access to Microsoft Teams on the day of the course. If you are in an institution that is managing their own Teams tenancy (CAMENT, JBS, medschl and some of the colleges) then you may not have access to the files or calendar used in the course. Please contact the instructor in advance to discuss this.
  • If you are using Hermes for your email you will not be able to access the Teams calendar used in the course.
  • It's advisable to make a test call in advance of the session.
  • The course will start promptly at the time shown but will be open up to 30 minutes beforehand should you wish to check your audio and visual setup or meet your instructor.

STEMM Libraries present: ”working together” virtual study room new Finished 13:00 - 16:30 Cambridge University Libraries Online

To support your studies, STEMM Libraries are offering a “working together” virtual study room. Set your goals for your afternoon of study and work informally alongside other students in a virtual space.

How will the study room work?

  • You don’t have to stay for the whole afternoon You can pop in, leave, return, and take breaks as you please. We are asking people to book so we manage access to the room so pick whatever date(s) work for you!
  • There will be a 30 minute comfort break halfway through the session.
  • Library staff will be present in the room if you have questions about resources or anything else library-related. We will also be there to make sure everything runs smoothly.
  • These study rooms will be delivered through Zoom and a link will be sent out as part of your booking.
  • Closed captioning will be enabled alongside the option to use breakout rooms for private discussion as needed.

Please note, the study rooms will run from the 17th March – 9th June initially.

Delegates will have the opportunity to practice using the techniques that they learn via exercises designed to be enjoyable and thought provoking.

If you are only going to need Read Only or Read Only with Export permissions this training is not required.

Introduction to Scientific Figure Design (ONLINE LIVE TRAINING) Finished 09:30 - 17:30 Bioinformatics Training Facility - Online LIVE Training

PLEASE NOTE that until further notice, due to the evolving situation with Coronavirus no courses will be offered as classroom based at the Training Facility. The Bioinformatics Team will be teaching the course live online in conjunction with the presenters.

This course provides a practical guide to producing figures for use in reports and publications.

It is a wide ranging course which looks at how to design figures to clearly and fairly represent your data, the practical aspects of graph creation, the allowable manipulation of bitmap images and compositing and editing of final figures.

The course will use a number of different open source software packages and is illustrated with a number of example figures adapted from common analysis tools.

These monthly meetings are for managers and leaders across the University to meet informally and talk about the successes and challenges of this part of their role. The meetings are for all those who are professionally responsible for others in the workplace, formally and informally.

The meeting may include a short update about the Network or opportunities for leaders and managers. Following that is the chance for smaller groups of colleagues to speak about current priorities and plans, and to feedback suggestions for the development of the Network, supported by PPD.

Fresh air will be circulated continuously during the study sessions and we therefore advise you to wrap up warmly as windows and doors will remain open.
