Description

Why is YouTube popular? Because people love watching videos. A research video can be a great way to get your message across to your collaborators, your friends, and the wider world as well as being a condition of some funding bodies. But it isn't easy to do well - and this is where this course will make a difference. Come along and learn the skills needed to plan and shoot high quality footage for research videos so that your video can stand out from the crowd. You just need yourself, a smartphone, a laptop and your enthusiasm! Prerequisites

    • Bring a fully charged smart phone with a camera or a digital camera capable of shooting video
    • USB cable to transfer footage to a laptop
    • Bring an idea for a short, simple video that you will shoot on the day. It does not need to be linked to your research
    • Charger in case your battery doesn't last
    • Laptop with free editing software: Da Vinci Resolve 20 (https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/uk/products/davinciresolve/) software downloaded, Please check it opens OK. If it doesn’t CapCut app or CapCut in Browser is a good option: https://www.capcut.com/

    • Conduct a good video interview
    • Learn video editing basics, and/or advanced techniques if you already have editing experience
Format

Day one Wednesday 18th Feb 2026 9.30am-4.30pm 7 hours. 2 x 15min breaks, 30min lunchbreak. Examples, Planning, & Shooting

Day Two Thursday 19th Feb 2026 1pm-4.30pm 3.5 hours. 15min break. Editing
