The ourcambridge Supporting our Staff team have developed this session, to provide a follow up to the very popular ‘What do you value in life?’ workshop. In the first session, participants identified their own personal values and considered what they might mean for how they lived their life and went about their work. In this follow up session, participants will reflect further on their personal values and participate in some exercises that will help them to identify further positive actions they can take to achieve closer alignment to their values in a supportive and motivating environment.

UIS Learning and Development: Mentoring in Practice (Unit 2) new Finished 11:00 - 12:30 UIS Online Courses - instructor-led

UIS facilitates a mentoring scheme exclusively for the University's IT community and UIS' internal staff.

Mentoring can be a really useful tool in supporting colleagues to develop their professional lives and careers, in both roles as a mentor and mentee.

This is a welcome event (Unit 2) and part of the UIS' Mentoring training journey, for all mentees and mentors enrolled in the 2021-22 programme. This interactive workshop is designed to give an overview and introduction to mentoring, giving the opportunity to explore the key benefits for mentors and mentees, practice some key skills needed for both mentors and mentees, mistakes to avoid and become familiar with some simple models and tools to support the mentoring partnership and maximise its value and impact.

5S is defined as a methodology that results in a workplace that is clean, uncluttered, safe, and well organized to help reduce waste and optimize productivity. It's designed to help build a quality work environment, both physically and mentally.

This short virtual session looks at the Lean 5S tool as a way of organising workspace and how this can help wellbeing. It also draws comparisons with the Marie Kondo tidying method.

In preparation for the session, please take a photograph of something that makes you happy.

You will receive joining instructions a few days before the session with instructions on where to upload your photographs.

Have you heard of the term ‘interruption science’? In this session Gloria Mark, Chancellor’s Professor of Informatics at the University of California (Irvine), will talk to us about the effects of disruptions in the world of work. What impact do the many interruptions we face on a daily basis (such as email notifications) really have on us and our productivity. During the session Gloria will also explore technology design and our attention spans, and a mindful approach to technology.

About the Trainer

Gloria Mark is Professor of Informatics at the University of California, Irvine. She received her PhD from Columbia University in psychology. She has been a visiting senior researcher at Microsoft Research since 2012. Her primary research interest is in understanding the impact of digital media on people's lives and she is best known for her work in studying people's multitasking, mood and behaviour while using digital media in real world environments. She has published over 150 papers in the top journals and conferences in the fields of human-computer interactions (HCI) and Computer-supported cooperative work (CSCW) and is author of the book Multitasking in the Digital Age.

  • Reflecting on and identifying your key areas for development

Each meeting will last for up to 45 minutes and, given the present circumstances relating to Covid-19, will be conducted online using Teams.

Do you know about environmental legislation that you need to comply with in your University role?

The University has committed to developing an Environmental Management System (EMS) in line with the international standard ISO:14001. As part of this, a programme of audits will soon take place, to determine compliance of University buildings and sites with environmental legislation. In this briefing session, we're providing relevant University staff with an overview of some of the key areas of environmental legislation that a typical EMS audit would cover, including practical tips and actions for staying compliant.

Each small group session will be facilitated by the Co-leads for the ‘Digital Workplace Programme'. Please note: these sessions will focus on technology in relation to hybrid working: software, hardware and digital skills.

Engaged Researcher Online - Animate Your Research (1 of 3) Finished 11:00 - 12:30 Phoenix 2, Phoenix Building, New Museums Site

We live in visually over-saturated society. How can we use visual information to help communicate an idea with impact and effectiveness? Animation can be a powerful tool to convey a message and to capture your audiences attention and interest. It allows huge leaps in time/ concept because we have accepted the visual language of cinema, we are soaked in it, so a car can become a dinosaur and a tennis ball a mitochondria. Animation allows a whole concept to be encapsulated and transmitted without the barrier of language, across cultures.

This course will introduce you to a range of animation and storytelling techniques using simple exercises to get you started on animating your own research, and feel more confident in working with visual material. The trainer will work with you personally to develop your new creative skills and to get started with your very own research visualisation.

The course will be led by Sally Stevens. Sally is an artist and animator based in Bristol, UK. Her moving image work encompasses 2D animation techniques including hand-drawn and paper cut-out, as well as video editing. She is interested in the use of animation in relation to performance, in visual analogy as a scientific tool, and has a fascination with composition and with the timing of things. She has a background in illustration and music, and has worked with theatre, orchestras and music groups to produce visual material for live events as well as video. She studied Animation MA at the Royal College of Art and since graduating has worked as a freelancer in London and Bristol, for clients including The Jersey Maritime Museum, The School of Life, the Disney Channel, M&C Saatchi, and Sound UK.

Funding Management Portal Training – Adding and Editing Funds new Finished 14:00 - 15:30 Online Live Training

This instructor-led session will introduce you to the new Cambridge University Funding Management Portal and teach you to add and edit your funds so that they can be published on the new Funding Search.

You will be given a demo of the new system, followed by an instructor-supported opportunity to enter a fund for yourself on a training test site. The objective of this introductory session is to give fund administrators training on the new system so that they can add and update their own funds over the summer, before the new Funding Search is published for applicants in September.

You must have the following items installed or available on your computer to participate.

1. The Teams desktop app installed on your computer.

2. You will also need a working webcam, speakers (or headset) and mic.

Note: You need to be connected to the Cambridge University network to access the training test site or the actual Funding Management Portal. If you are working in the office and connected directly to the Cambridge University, you should be able to automatically connect. If you are working from a remote location (including from home), you will need to connect via the UIS VPN service. Email marketing - strategy and tactics new Finished 15:00 - 16:00 Online

In July's content community session, we look under the hood of email marketing. Whether you're sending newsletters to your staff or event invitations to an external audience, this session is for you, with a blend of the strategic and the operational.

Email continues to defy the prophecies of its impending demise, surviving Slack, instant messaging and even WeChat/Weixin (for the most part). As email turns 50, we'll explore whether iOS 15 will end the newsletter boom, where trustworthiness and personalisation fit in to your email strategy, and if you even need email when there are social media, messenger apps and collaboration tools?

  • Liam Morgan will describe how he creates high-quality newsletters that are both effective and audience-centric
  • Ashley Coidan will discuss how a strategic approach to the channel can have benefits for recipient and sender alike (and he'll be seeking volunteers to be involved in developing guiding principles for the University's email marketing)

Cognos is a reporting tool that utilises data from CUFS to provide users with additional reports and options. This introductory course is designed for new reporters - covering everything from running a report successfully as well as a number of useful tips and shortcuts.

Note: This course is mandatory in order to attend either of the following two courses below.

What this introductory course does not do is go through in detail the outputs of each individual report. Report outputs are explained in further detail in the courses above.
