Across all AHSS disciplines (and within) there are varying views of what research is. Following the work of Thomas Kuhn, these views form what are commonly referred to as ‘research paradigms’, entailing a variety of epistemological (study of knowledge) and ontological (study of being) assumptions that ultimately underpin and guide how we carry out research (method). Though not a definitive means by which to conceptualize meta-research, this course offers the ‘research paradigm’ as a heuristic and expedient entry point into key terms and concepts often encountered by research students and the tactic assumptions underpinning them. This can and often does result in an ability to understand the significance of one’s own research, the research of others and the broader intellectual context in which both are situated. |

This two-day intensive workshop will introduce participants to the practice of game design. It will explore the different ways that digital and analogue games are designed, particularly how you can design with intent to communicate a mood, theme or message. Participants will learn game design skills - such as boxing-in, design documents and prototyping – alongside opportunities to test them out by creating their own short games. The sessions focus on game design, how to shape mechanics and play experiences, so no technical skills are needed. Participants will create their short games using both non-digital tools and simple, free software that will be taught in the session. The course participants will be selected via an application process, once a provisional place is booked a call for application form will be issued for completion and return by 1 November 2019. Once the applications are reviewed, places will be confirmed directly in the week beginning 18 November 2019. |

Please join us on Tuesday 3rd December (3–5 pm) for a social event to celebrate the end of the Data Champion year! This is an informal occasion to mark the end of 2019. There is no specific theme for the event; instead, we will explore a range of open topics via short talks and questions amidst general networking. Topics for talks and questions may be related, in the broadest sense, to Research Data Management and Open Research but do not need to cover these areas exclusively (lateral thoughts are welcomed!). In addition, Data Champions are encouraged to contribute their thoughts on the future structure of the programme and the content of forums in 2020 - all ideas will be gratefully received.
