Hands Up – Who's Looking After Their Hands at Work? new CANCELLED 12:45 - 13:45 Department of Physics, 213 Bragg Commitee Room

This session is aimed at staff / students whose role involves frequent hand washing or wearing of gloves as part of their personal protection equipment (PPE) and may be more suitable to those working in clinic and laboratory areas who are at greater risk of work-related dermatitis and /eczema.

The session will discuss the different types of dermatitis, provide advice on correct handwashing technique and use of gloves, as well as steps to avoid problems from developing and the action to take in the event that problems occur.

There will be an opportunity to evaluate hand washing techniques and assess skin hydration to show how this can impact upon the management of hand care.

It’s not often we get to spend time during the working day away from meetings, deadlines, appointments and mental to-do lists. Ideal for reducing anxiety, aiding healing, increasing focus, encouraging better sleep and improving general wellbeing; meditation can help you step away from the chaos in to a calm mind. Lucy, from White Lotus Meditation, will start with the basics of posture and mindful breathing before guiding you through some gentle visualisation meditations designed to relax and restore.

You won’t be asked to sit cross-legged on the floor, although may do so should you wish! Suitable for those new to meditation, anyone simply curious about it and for those with a regular practice.

    • Meditation is widely regarding for improving emotional health and general wellbeing. However, those with certain mental health conditions including schizophrenia and bi-polar should seek approval from their GP or mental health professional before commencing any sessions.

At a Menopause Café people gather to eat cake, drink tea and discuss menopause.

The objective is to increase awareness of the impact of the menopause on those experiencing it, their friends, colleagues and families, so that we can make conscious choices about this third stage of life.

A Menopause Cafe is a group directed discussion of menopause with no agenda, objectives or themes. It is a discussion group rather than a support or counselling session. We may split into small groups and you are welcome to just listen, although we hope you will join in on discussions.

Our Menopause Cafés are offered:

  • On a not for profit basis
  • In an accessible, respectful and confidential space
  • With no intention of leading people to any conclusion, product or course of action
  • Alongside refreshments!

Death and dying are still taboo subjects in British society, yet they are part of life and ultimately come to all of us.

This session will outline where people die in the UK, what is important to people as they approach the end of their lives and the support available towards the end of life and in bereavement.

There will be plenty of time for comments and questions.

Beyond ‘Man Up’: Men, Resilience and Wellbeing for University Staff new Finished 12:00 - 13:00 Institute of Criminology, Room B4

Wellbeing, mental health and resilience are increasingly being recognized as important. Yet, many people don’t reflect on the how they can influence their wellbeing through practices and approaches.

Men, in particular, are characterized as avoiding conversations and reflection on their own wellbeing, hiding behind their work, or stereotypical phases such as ‘man up’.

This interactive session run by the Good Lad Initiative will give participants the chance to talk with one another about the links between masculinities and their wellbeing. We will then workshop pragmatic alternatives and skills for coping with stress and improving wellbeing.

Mindfulness is a form of meditation that asks you to bring your full attention to the present moment.

In this hour-long workshop, we will be seeing how mindfulness can be used to deepen your appreciation of museum or gallery collections and also how museums and galleries can assist with mental health.

A French language workshop with a difference.

Learning a new language can do more than enrich your personal travels.  Scientific studies prove that it can protect an adult brain against ageing. 

This workshop will present an overview of France regional diversity, most famous sites and a few famous people and specialties.  It will be combining the acquisition of practical information and give you the opportunity to learn simple techniques to understand and communicate in a foreign language. 

This is assumed to be a difficult activity for the brain and yet it can be mastered.  By doing so you’ll unlock your brain potential and boost your memorization skills and have fun in the process.

Delivered in a safe and supportive environment, this bullying and sexual harassment prevention training offers individuals the opportunity to learn about the different factors that might create and perpetuate a work environment in which harassment and bullying occur, and strategies for how to address this.

Session Objectives:

  • Know what the University has in place to support and sustain a positive and thriving working environment for all staff and students
  • Clarify the expectations about professional behaviour in the HE context of:
    • What is acceptable and unacceptable?
    • The ‘grey’ areas
  • Understand the terms bullying, harassment and sexual misconduct and know what is in place to deal with these with a zero-tolerance approach
  • Know what you can do to create and sustain a positive and thriving environment for everyone.
