Description

This module provides a comprehensive introduction to coding in qualitative research, suitable for participants with little or no prior experience. It is designed to help researchers systematically identify, organise, and interpret patterns, themes, and meanings within qualitative data. The course combines a lecture with a hands-on workshop, enabling participants to develop practical coding skills while understanding the theoretical principles and strategies that underpin qualitative analysis.

Objectives

Learning outcomes

This course does not contain a formal assessment but has learning outcomes that are linked to the wider outcomes of the broader programme:

  • Demonstrate a comprehensive and critical understanding of the role of coding in qualitative research, recognising its central contribution to analytical depth, methodological rigour, and the production of robust and evidence-based insights
  • Identify, differentiate, and apply a range of coding approaches appropriately across diverse qualitative datasets
  • Design, implement, and adapt a coherent coding framework tailored to the specific needs and objectives of your research, ensuring analytical clarity and methodological transparency
  • Critically refine and evaluate coding practices, enhancing consistency, reflexivity, and the overall credibility of the analytical process
  • Synthesise coded data into higher-level analytical processes, integrating thematic development and conceptual interpretation to construct empirically grounded arguments
Format

The module is split into two sessions:

Session 1: Principles and strategies of coding in qualitative data analysis (Lecture)

Session 2: Mapping and interpreting qualitative data (Workshop)

The booking numbers for the workshop session are limited to 20 participants, however if a larger number are interested in attending we will open up an additional workshop.

System requirements

Participants will require a personal computer or laptop with internet access. No specific software is required.

Moodle

Moodle is the 'Virtual Learning Environment' (VLE) that CaRM uses to deliver online courses.

CaRM instructors use Moodle to make teaching resources available before, during, and/or after classes, and to make announcements and answer questions.

For this reason, it is vital that all students enrol onto and explore their course Moodle pages once booking their CaRM modules via the UTBS, and that they do so before their module begins. Moodle pages for modules should go live around a week before the module commences, but some may be made visible to students earlier.
