Level 5 in Leadership and Management Prerequisites
This programme develops a range of leadership and management skills and knowledge including the following topics: the role of the manager/leader, engaging and developing others and managing work and performance. It is highly participative and there is a strong emphasis on applying new learning to your work situation for the benefit of your team and your department.
The programme has been revised due to changes to course requirements for the Institute of Leadership in Management (ILM). The programme will not therefore be accredited by the ILM. However it does include those topics identified as most relevant to middle managers in the University and is broadly equivalent to Level 5 within the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). Successful achievement of the programme requires the assessment work to be completed as this gives evidence of how managers have developed and how they are putting their learning into practice.

To be able to:
- identify the specific responsibilities of middle managers in enabling the organisation to achieve its goals
- develop communication and interpersonal skills to improve the engagement of others
- develop the individuals in your team
- increase your skills in managing the work and performance of others
- A fee of £520 is payable for any College and Non-University Teaching Institution staff wishing to attend

- Application of learning and development of new skills will be assessed by the completion of an assignment and a series of learning logs
- You will also need to complete the University’s Managing Diversity e-learning module in your own time (approx 1.5 hour)
- The sessions focus on developing skills in the context of working within the University
- Each session involves a combination of theory and opportunities to practice the new skills learnt
- The methods used will include tutor input, small group and individual activities, case studies, practice sessions and group discussions
- You are encouraged to build on previous experience and to continually relate course content back to the issues and situations you face in your workplace
- Applications for the next programme will be considered in approximately December
