R: Introduction for Beginners

R is a language and environment for statistical computing and graphics, similar to the S language.

This course is for beginners and fairly new users of the package. Basic concepts and use of R will be introduced. The main aim of the course is to give participants a foundation and some background. However statistical techniques are not covered (see note below).

The course provides an overview of the R environment, and covers getting data into R, as well as reporting, graphing and analyses using R.

• All current University members (departments and colleges)
• Further details regarding eligibility criteria are available

• Familiarity with basic statistical concepts
• Elementary use of Linux

Presentations, demonstrations and practicals

R v. 3.0.1 on MCS Linux

• No attempt is made to teach statistical techniques, though simple examples are used to show the principles of R use.
• Practicals will be run on PCs using R under Linux
• Although not a prerequisite, attendees will greatly benefit from having prior experience of command line environments, such as might be obtained from the Unix: Introduction to the Command Line Interface course
