Description

The Course is delivered in blended-learning mode during the Michaelmas and Lent terms as well as Easter and the Long Vacation (intensive). It offers 30 hours of classroom tuition in groups (up to 20 students) and requires the students to study independently for additional 30 hours.

  • The Course introduces students to functions and notions such as.
  • To be able to describe one's routine, free time and weekends;
  • To be able to describe one's work experience including studies/jobs;
  • To be able to describe what one used to do before the current work/study situation, one's current responsibilities, and to be able to produce a CV for an interview;
  • To be able to talk about one's health, request medication and understand basic instructions given by a doctor or pharmacist;
  • To be able to discuss life styles and fitness routines;
  • To be able to recount an incident and narrate its basic information;
  • To be able to analyse how life used to be in the past and compare it with the present, recounting historic events;
  • To be able to comment on one's plans and wishes, and to analyse what one would do in a few hypothetical situations.
Objectives
  • By the end of the Course students will be able to:
  • Express opinions on abstract/cultural matters in a limited way or offer
  • Listening/Speaking: Advice within a known area, and understand instructions or public announcements.
  • Reading: Understand routine information and articles, and the general meaning of
  • Writing: Write letters or make notes on familiar or predictable matters.
Aims
  • At Basic 2 level the main aims are:
  • To expand on the topics covered during Basic 1.
  • To build on a basic understanding and an appreciation of the salient linguistic features.
  • To establish the learner as a confident language user in a range of predictable everyday situations.
  • To equip the learner with the skills and knowledge to deal with straightforward job

applications and interviews.

  • To increase students' knowledge of the cultural background of Urdu within the context of language teaching.

Assessment Methods
  • Formative assessment is provided through regular feedback during lessons as well as via e- mail.
  • Assessment is divided between coursework and summative assessment at the end of the course:
  • Coursework consists of two brief (15 min) in-class tests worth 10% of the final mark each.
  • At the end of the Course students will take exams in listening-comprehension (worth 25% of the final mark) and reading-comprehension (25%) and will deliver an oral presentation (30%)
Duration
  • Fifteen taught sessions of two hours plus online learning

  • Three times per year (subject to demand)
