Description

This course offers 30 hours of face-to-face, classroom teaching over a period of 5 weeks. The learning experience is enhanced by the use of multimedia, interactive materials delivered online and administered via CamTools.

The total commitment for this course is of around 70 hours (14 hours a week).

The primary focus of the course is to develop your listening (aural) and speaking (oral) skills with special reference to topics and functions related to medicine and the medical profession, and to enable them to carry out research in Japanese as well as to communicate effectively with colleagues and patients from the Japanese-speaking world.

Towards the end of the course (last 2 weeks), each student will have a single one-hour session with the tutor who will give guidance and advice for the preparation of the final presentation.

Target audience

School of Clinical Medicine Student Selected Component (SSC) - Language Provision for Medical students and staff.

Objectives

On completion of the course students will have reached the C1 Level of the The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL). (For more information about levels, see the levels page.)

Students will also gain a greater understanding of the Japanese society and culture with special emphasis to the medical context. Students will be introduced to the Japanese used in general medical situations and be operational in these.

Format

The teaching methodology is learner-centred as great attention is placed upon the cultural background, learning style and needs of each individual student.

The course features a strong presence of multimedia digital materials that are accessible online in a flexible manner. The 'social environment' of the classroom is exploited to maximise the opportunities for learners' to practise and improve real-time, face-to-face communication skills.

Notes

Assessment:

At the end of weeks 1-4, students will write for homework and submit a 250-400 words essay written in Japanese. The three best essays will count towards the final mark (10% each).

At the end of the course, students will give a presentation in front of the class. The topic of the presentation will be relevant to both the course content and student's medical study interest.

Lasting 10 minutes and followed by a 5 minute Q&A session, the presentation will count 70% towards the final mark.
