Chemistry: Graduate Lecture Series: (CT5) Small Angle Scattering Techniques in Soft Matter Nanotechnology: A Local Structure Probe (2L)

Thu 4 Dec, Tue 9 Dec 2014

Description

CHARACTERISATION TECHNIQUES (CT)

(CT5) Small Angle Scattering Techniques in Soft Matter Nanotechnology: A Local Structure Probe (2L)

A general introduction to Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) and Neutron scattering (SANS) techniques will be given, as well as how they can be used to access the structural properties of soft matter systems (including nanocolloids, polymers, gels, nanoclusters and nanocomposites) generally used in Soft Matter Nanosciences. The objective of these lectures is to highlight the basic models which can assist with reading, comparing and understanding the acquired data.

The general principles used in scattering-based techniques will be described, their advantages and limitations, and a few examples of their potential in cutting-edge science given. Then the different useful frameworks will be described, in which the typical data can be processed to reveal key information about the studied system. A ‘learning-from-examples’ approach will be used and highlight the key concepts used in data analysis prior to any further help of simulation tools.
