This course is designed for non-native speakers of English and covers a variety of spoken language, ranging from the more formal language needed for seminars, discussions and conferences, to the more informal everyday language used in the office or the student house, or in wider social settings, whether online or face-to-face. The course, wherever possible, will take into account the needs and wishes of the participants. This is an opportunity to meet people and to practise your spoken English online in an informal and relaxed environment.

The course is designed to give participants an overview of the history and principles of the Lean methodology, and an explanation of some of the basic tools used to make improvements to processes. This session will provide some basic tools that can be used immediately to facilitate a continuous improvement way of working This course is accredited with the LCS (Lean Competency System), a certificate will be provided on completion of a short assessment. Anyone who is a first-time user of unsealed radioactive substances is expected to attend this acquaintanceship course before they begin the work. Users of radioactive substances who are new to the University should also attend. This course also acts as a refresher for experienced users and for users from other institutions or countries. There will be time for discussion and questions at the end of the session. You will be required to complete a short quiz after the course to confirm your understanding of core aspects of radiation safety. This live session is designed to build your skills in reading critically and assessing resources as part of your first year studies. Additional techniques around using effective note-taking, selecting what to read from lectures, as well as building your critical language when writing your first pieces of work will also be covered. There will opportunities for discussion throughout the session so you can ask any questions you may have. This session is for students taking a Biological Sciences route (Natural Sciences, Psychology & MedVet) at Part IA/IB. |

This course will help you understand how to undertake a risk of bias assessment of a systematic review, assessing its reliability, trustworthiness, and applicability. The session uses the ROBIS tool to assess a preselected published systematic review. We ask that you read a paper that will be provided before you attend the session, in order for us to make the best use of the time together. UPDATE: Please note that some Medical Library sessions are taught in person, and some are taught online. Please ensure you check the venue details before booking a place. This course will introduce students to the general philosophical debates concerning scientific methodology, assessing their ramifications for the conduct of qualitative social research. It will enable students to critically evaluate major programmes in the philosophy of sciences, considering whether there are important analytic differences between the social and natural sciences; and whether qualitative methods themselves comprise a unified approach to the study of social reality. |
