UIS Learning and Development: Speed Mentoring for UIS New Starters
New

Tue 6 Jul 2021

Description

For the first time in UIS, we are offering our new starters the opportunity to be involved in a virtual speed mentoring event. This energetic learning and networking activity will provide the opportunity to speak to some of UIS’ senior leaders and managers from different disciplines.

UIS mentors involved in the event:

  • Ian Leslie - Director
  • Kate Livingstone - Head of User Research
  • Ron Chambers - Head of Business Systems Assurance
  • Simon Clarke - Head of Digital Workplace Programme
  • Gabriela Ahmadi-Assalemi - Deputy Chief Information Security
  • Abraham Martin - Head of Development and Operations
Target audience

UIS new colleagues who joined us from March 2020.

Prerequisites

Please do the following in advance of the session:

  • Think about a problem/issue/challenge you would like to address during the session.
  • Try to identify any options you may be considering and think about the advantages and disadvantages of these.
  • Note down a two-minute description of yourself and your role that provides context.

During each speed mentoring session, you will be asked to start with the description of yourself and then move on to the description of your problem/issue/challenge.

Please join the session 15 minutes in advance to ensure a smooth running and prompt start.

Objectives

Speed mentoring offers you the opportunity for a series of short one-to-one, focused conversations about a specific professional and career-related question and access to an incredible breadth and depth of collective wisdom. You will rotate around four different mentors, spending around 10 minutes with each, to gain different perspectives on an issue you are seeking to resolve.

Aims
  • provide an opportunity for new starters to meet and tap into the wisdom of senior leaders.
  • maximise interaction, enabling the mentor and mentee to speak to lots of people in a short space of time.
  • develop a networking opportunity for all involved, with the potential to initiate an ongoing mentoring relationship.
  • allow for the quick-fire exchange of ideas about professional development.
  • provide an opportunity for both mentors and mentees to share knowledge and experience.
Format

You will attend four 10 minute one-to-one meetings with a mentor and also meet with all group attendees at the start and end of the event.

Notes

We can only accommodate six new staff mentees at this time. It will be on a first come, first served basis and you will be invited to meet four out of the six mentors listed. Due to the complexity of the scheduling, it is not possible to request particular mentors. You will be sent details of who you will be meeting and the times, in advance. We will evaluate the effectiveness of this initiative by the end of the event to take an informed decisions of running a few more Speed mentoring events in the future.
