Analysing Business Processes: Where Do I Start? new Wed 13 Mar 2019   14:00 Finished

This short session will provide an understanding of the principles, tools and techniques involved in Process Analysis with a view to improving business process effectiveness and efficiency. Delegates will have the opportunity to practice using the techniques that they learn via exercises designed to be enjoyable and thought provoking.

The course refers to the methodology used in conjunction with Triaster process mapping software available to users across the University of Cambridge.

  • Please note that although this course is being hosted at Cambridge, it is being organised and run by EPCC at the University of Edinburgh.

Since the 2011 revision to the C++ language and standard library, the ways it is now being used are quite different. Used well, these features enable the programmer to write elegant, reusable and portable code that runs efficiently on a variety of architectures.

However it is still a very large and complex tool. This set of online lectures, delivered over two Wednesday afternoons and including practical exercises, will cover a minimal set of features to allow an experienced non-C++ programmer to get to grips with language.

These include:

  • overloading
  • templates
  • containers
  • iterators
  • lambdas and standard algorithms.

It concludes with a brief discussion of modern frameworks for portable parallel performance which are commonly implemented in C++.

This session is provided for University staff who have an Occupational Health referral or for students who have a Disability Resource Centre referral for specialised one-to-one support. Bespoke sessions cover support for users with:

  • Mobility issues, such as an upper limb disorder, where ergonomic keyboards and mice or speech recognition software may be required
  • Visual impairment requirements where magnification or text scanning to alternative format can assist users to view a computer screen or read and listen to text
  • Specific learning difficulties, who may find speech recognition software or mind mapping software useful

A session typically fall into 2 categories:

  • Looking at available hardware, software or IT techniques that can aid in the development of tailored strategies and solutions to help users independently access computing facilities
  • Providing training for Assistive Technology software packages to help users progress with the software

At time of booking please specify the following details in the Special Requirements box

ATLAS.ti: An Introduction for Qualitative Research Mon 10 Jun 2019   09:30 Finished

This course will introduce ATLAS.ti a Computer Aided Qualitative Data Analysis Software (CAQDAS) which supports qualitative and mixed methods research. It provides a means to collect, organise and analyse content from interviews, focus group discussions, surveys and audio.

This instructor-led fee based course has been commissioned by the UIS through a third party company.

Learn how with Windows PowerShell 4.0, you can remotely manage multiple Windows based servers and automate day to day management and administration tasks.

The course is built on Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows 8.1 and while it is specifically focused on Windows PowerShell v4.0, is also relevant in v2.0 and v3.0 Windows PowerShell environments.

This five day course provides students with the fundamental knowledge and skills, using hands-on instruction and practice, to use Windows PowerShell 4.0 for administering and automating administration of Windows based servers. It focuses on primary Windows PowerShell command-line features and techniques, and will provide pre-requisite skills supporting a broad range of Microsoft products, including Windows Server, Windows Client, Exchange Server, SharePoint Server, SQL Server, System Center, and more. In keeping with that goal, this course will not focus on any one of those products, although Windows Server (which is the common platform for all of those) will serve as the example for the techniques being taught.

In this five day course you will learn to execute and monitor scripts more efficiently through more robust session connectivity, workflow capabilities, enhanced job scheduling, and Windows PowerShell Web Access. The Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) programme is open to University IT Supporters. It covers network technology, protocols and theory at deeper levels reflective of University practices. There is a fee to attend this course and an additional fee to take the CCNA (200-120) certification exam.

CCNA Routing and Switching provides a comprehensive overview of networking concepts and skills, from network applications to the protocols and services provided to those applications by the lower layers of the network, with an emphasis on practical application, work-force readiness, and soft-skills development. You will progress from basic networking to more complex enterprise and theoretical networking models later in the curriculum.

We offer this program as instructor led with online access to the curriculum with the support of interactive media and an online networks laboratory called NETLAB. There is a mix of lecture, demonstrations and a heavy emphasis on practical activities using live lab equipment and a simulation package.

Introduction to Networks is the first module of four modules in CCNA. Please book onto this first module to reserve your place for the whole programme.

This module introduces the architecture, structure, functions, components, and models of the Internet and computer networks. The principles of IP addressing and fundamentals of Ethernet concepts, media, and operations are introduced to provide a foundation for the curriculum. By the end of the course, you will be able to build simple LANs, perform basic configurations for routers and switches, and implement IP addressing schemes.

This course describes the architecture, components, and operations of routers and switches in a small network. You will learn how to configure a router and a switch for basic functionality. By the end of this course, you will be able to configure and troubleshoot routers and switches and resolve common issues with RIPv1, RIPv2, single-area and multi-area OSPF, virtual LANs, and inter-VLAN routing in both IPv4 and IPv6 networks.

This course describes the architecture, components, and operations of routers and switches in a large and complex network. You will learn how to configure routers and switches for advanced functionality. By the end of this course, you will be able to configure and troubleshoot routers and switches and resolve common issues with OSPF, EIGRP, STP, and VTP in both IPv4 and IPv6 networks. You will also develop the knowledge and skills needed to implement DHCP and DNS operations in a network.

This course discusses the WAN technologies and network services required by converged applications in a complex network. The course enables you to understand the selection criteria of network devices and WAN technologies to meet network requirements. You will learn how to configure and troubleshoot network devices and resolve common issues with data link protocols. You also develop the knowledge and skills needed to implement IPSec and virtual private network (VPN) operations in a complex network

This is an introduction to programming in modern C++, based on the book "'Programming: Principles and Practice using C++"' (2nd ed.) by Bjarne Stroustrup. The aim is to teach participants how to write non trivial, practical programs that are comprehensible and portable. Participants should also be able to understand and modify most well-written C++ applications, though not necessarily every aspect of them.

C++ is a large and complicated language, which is reflected in the length of this course. The creator of C++, Prof. Stroustrup, estimates that newcomers to programming will have to devote in excess of 200 hours' of work to learn how to program in C++ properly. Please bear that in mind if signing up for the course. It would also be of help (though not essential) if attendees have some prior programming experience in another language, e.g. Python.

The Cyber Security - Stay Safe Online course is an interactive tutorial relating the current cyber security threats and advice on how to avoid them.

Think you won’t get caught in a phishing scam? Think again, below is the same email address written twice, how quickly can you spot the one containing the error?

It is hard to see the difference, especially when you have a heavy schedule of work and many distractions. The scam address is the bottom one with an 'l' instead of an 'i'. Imagine if you had transferred money or sent some sensitive data to the wrong email address . . . This interactive tutorial aims to raise your awareness of the most common techniques, not only email, that criminals use to gain access to your personal data, University sensitive information and networks. It will take between 30 to 40 minutes to work through and is based on real life scenarios that you may encounter in your day to day work

An informative and social event to celebrate the launch of a new University Developer Hub.

University Information Services with support from developers across the University has been working on customising a University Developer Hub. The Hub is hosted using a GitLab application, with the aim to provide a valuable collaboration resource for developers and code users.

There will be short presentations from the alpha testers who will share their experience and involvement in testing the Hub. You’ll have the opportunity to ask informal questions about the service and meet with like-minded professionals involved with developing.

To celebrate the launch of the University Developer Hub, all attendees are welcome to stay for drinks and light refreshments served after the presentation.

This course will cover features and concepts of Drupal Content Management Service through hands on activities.

  • This event is being organised jointly between UIS and the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology at DAMTP.
  • In this workshop, we will start with an overview of the latest micro-processor architectures and how the intrinsic parallelism has been implemented in hardware, mainly the SIMD instructions and multi-threading. Then we focus on how to define and measure processor and memory performance and how this is related to the application level. In particular we describe the roofline model approach, which gives an estimation and a visual model useful to estimate the application performance and the limitation of the underlying hardware.
  • With the help of examples and use cases, we pinpoint you to possible inefficiencies both on threading and vectorization and we explain remedies, hints and strategies to be considered to ensure an application delivers great performance on today’s scalable hardware and upcoming future generations.
  • Furthermore we will show how performance analysis tools like Intel® Advisor and Intel® VTune™ Amplifier, together with examples and use cases, pinpoint you to inefficiencies both on threading and vectorization and also give hints to remedies.
  • Attendees should be comfortable with either C/C++ or Fortran programming language and basic Linux command, like make and ssh. No previous experience in vectorization and parallelization is required and profiling tools, as well.

This course is intended to build on the introductory EndNote course and give attenders practical experience of editing EndNote output styles.

EndNote output styles control the way EndNote sets out references and their citations in printed documents. By editing these, you can achieve precise control of the way your bibliography is set out.

An introduction to using the bibliography program EndNote to store references and notes and use them to achieve correct referencing in your documents without re-typing. This course covers both EndNote Desktop and the free, browser based, "lite" version, EndNote Online.

Using EndNote will enable you to keep a note of references as you research online so that you will always be able to document your sources correctly. It can save you time as you should never need to retype references and you can alter their layout with a couple of mouse-clicks.

The course is a train the trainer session including an introduction to EndNote 8, plus an opportunity to discuss supporting EndNote in a Research University environment, use of EndNote for Systematic Reviews and Q&A session.

The aim of this talk is to introduce UIS plans to manage the University-wide Active Directory - Blue with Active Directory Management System (ADMS) which would receive all updates to the AD and provide more detailed access controls than is possible with the native Active Directory tools.
