The course is designed to take someone from having no knowledge of the Unix command line to being able to navigate around directories, and doing simple file manipulation. Then some of the more basic commands, will be introduced, including information on how to get more help from the system itself. Finally accessing remote computers by ssh and the most basic of shell scripts will be introduced.

Adobe Illustrator CC is a the industry leading professional illustration and drawing program for the creation of vector based graphics and artwork.

Please note: This course requires that you use your CRSid and Raven password to log into Adobe Creative Cloud. If you currently log in to use Microsoft Office, then the same login details are used, and you do not need to do anything except to know your Raven password.

Mendeley: Introduction to a Reference Management Program (Self-paced) CANCELLED 14:00 - 16:00 University Information Services, 17 Mill Lane Training Room

Mendeley is a free, open source reference management program. It was originally primarily intended as a way to manage collections of PDF documents and this is still its main strength in comparison with other tools such as EndNote and Zotero.

Mendeley can be used to insert reference citations and a bibliography of cited references into Word and Open Office documents and may be of interest to anyone wanting a free reference management program which will create BibTeX citation keys and paste them into a LaTeX document.

This is a basic introductory course and probably will not be very useful to those who are already using the program and who have specific queries about the way it works.

This course will introduce NVivo a Computer Aided Qualitative Data Analysis Software (CAQDAS) which supports qualitative and mixed methods research. It provides a means to collect, organise and analyse content from interviews, focus group discussions, surveys and audio.

This course covers some of the more challenging functions such as IF, SUMIFS and VLOOKUP. Not all chapters will be taught in full due to time constraints but are included for self-study.

You will:

  • Understand Teams, Channels and an overview of what is possible in the application
  • Chat in a group or one-to-one
  • Collaborate with colleagues. In Teams you can access, share, and edit Word docs, PowerPoint, and Excel files in real time

Please read

  • The course will start promptly at the time shown below, but your instructor will be online 30 minutes beforehand so you can check your computer set up.
  • You can do this ahead of the session from within Teams by clicking your user account image, Settings, Devices.
  • Using a webcam is optional but using one will give you a better learning experience.

Need to present meetings or teach using Teams? Then join us in this friendly hand on session to learn how to get up and running. You will have the opportunity to practice managing a meeting.

The course is taught using Microsoft Teams and you must have Teams installed on your computer to participate. If you are not using Outlook or Exchange Online for your email, please contact the instructor to discuss the implications for this course.

You will:

  • Understand the various ways of meeting with colleagues
  • Create a meeting for yourself or on behalf of others
  • Give and take control of participants' desktops
  • Practice managing your content when leading a meeting or teaching online

Want to practice giving Teams Live Events? Then join us in this informal introductory session to manage and deliver a webinar. The course is not about presentation skills, it is to master the mechanics of managing the smooth transition between different presenters and content. The maximum number of participants for this course is limited to 2.

You must have Teams installed on your computer to participate. You will need a working webcam, speakers (or headset) and mic.

You will:

  • Learn about Teams Live Events
  • Practice schedulling and delivering a Live Event. Please have a short PowerPoint and one other application ready to demonstrate, e.g a web site with video content
