Bioinformatics: Interpreting Phylogenies

Prerequisites

This introductory 1-day course is for people who have recently started working with molecular phylogenetic trees, either estimating their own, working in collaboration with others who estimate them, or reading articles that include trees. Further information is available.

Number of sessions: 1

• an introduction to basic terminology and concepts associated with phylogenies
• a brief discussion of some issues related to multiple sequence alignment
• demonstrations and exercises using tree viewing tools
• an example phylogenetic analysis taken from beginning to end

As a result of attending the course, participants will be better able to:

• appropriately and correctly interpret the results of phylogenetic analyses
• visualise and manipulate the results of phylogenetic analyses
• develop and link together different stages in a phylogenetic analysis
