Fire Training Online Self-taught Not bookable

Raise fire safety awareness for all members of the University and assist fire safety managers to comply with current fire safety legislation.

Please note that you will need to register when using the online fire training for the first time and know who your Fire Safety Manager is. Your Department should advise you who your Fire Safety Manager is. Fire Safety Managers should be able to provide you with the first time user guide with instructions for registration. Alternatively you can contact us for this information. To access the training please click on Online Fire Training.

Fire Warden training (0900-1030) will give clear instruction of the roles of designated fire wardens and assist fire safety managers to comply with current fire safety legislation. Use of Fire Extinguisher training (1045-1145) provides hands on experience in the correct use of portable fire extinguishers.

First Aid Training Unscheduled Not bookable

First Aid for Fieldwork, First Aid for Frontline Staff and First Aid for Laboratory Workers training is available on request. Please contact us to discuss your requirements.

This half hour sharply focused course is primarily aimed at frontline staff (but all welcome). The course will tell you what you must do and give practical examples and handouts.

Glass and Sharps Hazards in the Laboratory new Mon 25 Apr 2016   09:30 Finished

Cuts or puncture wounds caused by sharps of one sort or another form a large proportion of accidents reported to the Safety Office. Supervisors and senior technicians in laboratories and workshops should attend this session. We will discuss practical examples and review actual accident records as well as looking at good and bad practice, legal requirements and management issues.

This online course is intended to provide some basic information about health and safety in the University and help you to understand your responsibility to: Keep yourself safe, look out for the safety of others, and co-operate with your department and the University.

Are you responsible for safety inspections of the place where you work? This course will help you to understand the role of inspections in safety management; enable you to draw up checklists for inspections; know what to look for while inspecting; understand how to report effectively on the results of safety inspections. Sample checklists are available. The time these save you is more than the time you will spend at the course.

Fire Safety Awareness training provided by the NHS for all embedded tenants.

Venue: Alice Fisher Lecture Theatre, located in the S Block opposite the rear concourse.

Could you be asked to investigate an accident that happened in your department? Would you know how to go about it? And, having determined the causes, minimise the chances of it happening again? Anyone who may be asked to investigate an accident is welcome, but it is particularly relevant to those who supervise and manage others and Departmental Safety Officers. Video, case studies and discussion will be used to clarify why accidents and incidents should be investigated and how to tackle an investigation. We will look beyond the immediate causes of accidents to root causes.

Managing Safely is ideally suited to managers, research supervisors, administrators with safety responsibilities and Departmental Safety Officers across all sectors of the University. It leads to a nationally recognised and accredited qualification.

Please note to be successful in gaining the qualification delegates will need to pass an assessment on day 3 of the course and complete a risk assessment project to be handed in at a later date. (IOSH is the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health.)
