This weekly class is intended to help research students in the Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences to develop their skills in reading German documents they need to deal with in their research. Each session will be divided into two parts:

The first part will consist of grammar, tasks to develop insight into the reading process, help with dealing with complex sentence structures, academic conventions, abbreviations, etc.

The second part will be devoted to the translation of original German texts from different periods and covering a range of topics. Each week you will be asked to attempt a translation into English of a German passage. Students will be encouraged to bring along German texts from their own research to translate.

PLEASE NOTE The Bioinformatics Team are presently teaching as many courses live online, with tutors available to help you work through the course material on a personal copy of the course environment. We aim to simulate the classroom experience as closely as possible, with opportunities for one-to-one discussion with tutors and a focus on interactivity throughout.

This course covers concepts and strategies for working more effectively with Python with the aim of writing reusable code, using function and libraries. Participants will acquire a working knowledge of key concepts which are prerequisites for advanced programming in Python e.g. writing modules and classes.

Note: this course is the continuation of the Introduction to Solving Biological Problems with Python; participants are expected to have attended the introductory Python course and/or have acquired some working knowledge of Python. This course is also open to Python beginners who are already fluent in other programming languages as this will help them to quickly get started in Python.

Effective Meetings: Focus Groups new Finished 10:00 - 10:40

This focus group provides an opportunity for you to support the ourcambridge team and contribute to the delivery of more effective and efficient meetings across the University.

Are you fed up with ineffective meetings? Or, are you already approaching meetings in an innovative way? The ourcambridge team would love your input, which will help to shape the guidance and toolkit we are producing.

The focus group will be formed of 6 colleagues using Microsoft Teams to discuss and answer a short series of questions centred around effective meetings and the guidance produced.

Need to get up to speed with Teams? Then join us in this friendly, slow-paced, introductory session to learn how to get up and running. This is Part 1 of 4 courses that provide you the opportunity to get a hands on and in-depth insight into Teams. If you prefer a quick overview of Teams then consider joining the Fast Track course instead. Please note that the course is taught using Microsoft Teams and you must have Teams installed on your computer to participate.

You will:

  • Understand Teams, Channels and an overview of what is possible in the application
  • Chat in a group or one-to-one

This week-long training will focus on Public Engagement and Policy. The week will start with a first session introducing the policy sector, possible forms of policy collaboration for researchers and professionals, the skills and competences needed and practical tips to immediately start your policy engagement. Because of the current context requiring many of us to work from home, the second session will be specifically dedicated to „branding“ yourself online when reaching out to relevant policy actors. The third session will consist of an interactive meeting during which participants will pitch their research to stress its policy relevance. Instructions will be circulated during the week. There will also be available slots for personal and group mentoring. The training is open to early and mid career researchers and professional staff willing to enhance their understanding of policy engagement.

This training will be led by Dr. Maja Spanu, a Junior Research Fellow in International Relations in Cambridge and postdoc lead for Humanities and Social Science fort the University’s Public Engagement Advisory Group.

Structure of the session: Monday 11 am-11.45 am: Session I Introductory Session + Q&A Tuesday 11 am: Dissemination of written instructions on Teams platform for Friday’s session on ‘pitching your research’. Please note that the Conversation Hours will be delivered online

This conversation hour offers learners with an independent conversational ability (B2/C1 level upwards) a chance to practice speaking German with others in a relaxed and informal group led by a native-speaker facilitator. The content of the sessions is decided by the participants, with members taking turns to propose a topic and source materials (newspaper articles, web links, video etc.) to use as a basis for discussion. The groups are ideal for those who wish to retain or improve upon the language skills they already have or for those studying for a language degree who would like another forum for low-pressure, informal practice. This is also a great follow-up activity for CULP German learners and can be repeated year after year.

Participants from German Advanced CULP are warmly invited to attend the German Conversation Hour.

If you are an intermediate level learner and would like the chance to improve your speaking skills in a relaxed and informal setting, then this opportunity might interest you.

Come along and take it in turns to choose a conversation topic of personal interest each week. This could be one that's familiar to you but you want to practise more. Devise 4-5 questions to get the conversation started. Example topics could be holidays, food, traditions or hobbies. **If you are at the stage where you would like to discuss newspaper articles/current affairs, please attend the Advanced Conversation Hour.**

Receive feedback on your pronunciation and accuracy, and try stretching yourself further.

Suitable for those who have completed an intermediate 1 French CULP course or those who have a B1 level in the CEFR.

Presentation Skills Coaching: Making an Impact (One-to-One or small group) CANCELLED 15:30 - 16:30 Greenwich House, Edmonton Room

If you would like to refine your speaking style, increase your personal impact, or address any concerns you may have about your communication skills, these sessions are aimed at identifying the areas you need to focus on, from how you shape an interesting and effective presentation to how you deliver it, and any point in between.

You may find it useful to have completed the Presentation Skills online module before attending the session.

One-to-one coaching:

  • Please only book one session at a time.
  • It is possible to book a follow-up session for additional support; the course trainer will advise when this may be helpful.
  • Please note that administration and delivery cost for a 1:1 session is significant. Late cancellation or non-attendance costs the University and also prevents another employee from receiving this specialist support.

New small group coaching:

  • Up to 4 colleagues may attend up to 3 sessions together, spread over a few weeks/months.
  • Please book up to 3 of the 1:1 sessions on any date/time (booking under the same lead name) and then email ppd@admin.cam.ac.uk with the names of the additional attendees in the group.
  • This option may be particularly beneficial for those in similar roles or teams, and who would value working together in this area.
