Further Topics in Multivariate Analysis (FTMA) 2

Tue 8 Feb, Tue 15 Feb, Tue 8 Mar 2022

Description

This module is an extension of the three previous modules in the Basic Statistics stream, and introduces more complex and nuanced aspects of the theory and practice of mutivariate analysis. Students will learn the theory behind the methods covered, how to implement them in practice, how to interpret their results, and how to write intelligently about their findings. Half of the module is based in the lecture theatre; the other half is lab-based, in which students will work through practical exercises using the statistical software Stata.

Topics covered include:

  • Interaction effects in regression models: how to estimate these and how to interpret them
  • Marginal effects from interacted models
  • Ordered and categorical discrete dependent variable models (ordered and multinomial logit and probit)

To get the most out of the course, you should also expect to spend some time between sessions building your own statistical models.

Target audience
  • University Students from Tier 1 Departments
  • Further details regarding eligibility criteria are available here
Prerequisites

You should have a reasonable knowledge of the basic statistical material covered in FiAS, BQA and DMA - in other words, you should have a good working knowledge of basic multivariate regression techniques. You will also need a good working knowledge of Stata. If you have not used Stata before, please enrol in the SSRMP's 'Introduction to Stata' module. If this is not possible, you may be able to get by with the SSRMP's 90-minute Stata materials.

How to Book

Please complete the Basic Statistics Stream booking request form on the SSRMP website

Moodle

Moodle is the 'Virtual Learning Environment' (VLE) that the SSRMP uses to deliver online courses.

SSRMP lecturers use Moodle to make teaching resources available before, during, and/or after classes, and to make announcements and answer questions.

For this reason, it is vital that all SSRMP students enrol onto and explore their course Moodle pages once booking their SSRMP modules via the UTBS, and that they do so before their module begins. Moodle pages for modules should go live around a week before the module commences, but some may be made visible to students, earlier.
