Part 1 of this session is mandatory for everyone and covers what to do in an emergency, and how to report problems.

There will be a short refreshment break before Part 2.

Part 2 is mandatory only for people carrying out practical experiments in a laboratory. Students planning computational or theory work are not expected to attend this section.

Target audience
  • Part III and MASt students who will be carrying out their projects at Department of Physics, University of Cambridge
  • Further details regarding eligibility criteria are available
Objectives

By the end of the session, students should be able to:

  • Explain what to do if they hear a fire alarm, find a fire or need first aid
  • Describe their responsibilities for H&S as well as their supervisor's and the Department's
  • Set up their workstations correctly

People doing practical experiments, after attending Part 2 of this session, should also be able to:

  • Write a risk assessment for their proposed project
  • Identify hazards and related risks, and consider how they can carry out their project without undue risks to themselves and others
  • Justify the health and safety aspects of their project to their supervisor
Aims

To enable all Part III and MASt students to work safely at the Department of Physics regardless of the work they do.

Format

If you have attended this training in the last year (e.g. if you were a summer student), please notify Katherine Worster at the Undergraduate Office so you can be exempted from this briefing.

Duration

Two sessions - Part 1 is approximately 50 minutes and Part 2 (risk assessment) approximately one hour. There will be a short break in between the sessions.
