Departmental Responsible Person Training (TG1)

This is a City and Guilds accredited course which will provide delegates with an understanding of the risks and the legal requirements under the Approved Code of Practice Legionnaires' disease. The control of legionella bacteria in water systems 2013.

University departmental staff only - Those who would take on the role of Departmental Responsible Person (Water) and/or Deputy Departmental Responsible Person (Water) and therefore responsible for those undertaking activities on systems containing water within their department.

Number of sessions: 1

• Knowledge of the origins of Legionnaires’ disease, legionella bacteria and the multiplication factors which allow it to proliferate in water systems
• Knowledge of other potentially pathogenic waterborne bacteria
• Identification of the main conditions that are required for legionella and other associated infections to take place and how this understanding may be used to manage and control risk more effectively
• Awareness of current legal requirements, approved codes of practice and best practice guidance including COSHH, the HSE’s ACOP L8, HSG274 Parts
• 1, 2 and 3 and HTM04-01 (Healthcare only)
• Basic design of water systems and their components
• An overview of “other” risk systems
• Implementation of legionella, and other bacteria, control regimes with suitable monitoring programmes and records to manage the risk
• Risk assessment requirements and management
• An overview of programmed renovation and/or remediation works

Having attended the course delegates should:

• Understand the basic legal requirements in order to comply with HSG 274 and Approved Code of Practice (L8)
• Understand how Water Safety is managed within the University of Cambridge Operational Estate
• Understand the responsibilities placed upon departments in respect of Water Safety
• Understand the health hazards and risks relating to legionella and what precautions need to be taken
• Have an insight into how legionella proliferates
• Have an understanding of the types of control employed to reduce
• Have a basic understanding of the process involved when considering changes to a water system

Presentations

• Delegates will receive a comprehensive training pack.
• There will be a short multi-choice test at the end of the course. Delegates who successfully complete the training will be issued with a certificate.
