Description

As a researcher, you will collect a lot of data throughout your research. Whether that data takes the form of spreadsheets, audio-visual recordings, images, interview transcripts, or something entirely different, it's crucial that you manage it well throughout your project. Funders also require applicants to demonstrate they have a clear idea of how research data is going to be managed throughout a project. This course will introduce both students and researchers to some of the basics of managing research data and equip them with strategies for effective data management throughout the research life cycle. It will complement other CaRM modules you are undertaking such as Research Data Security, Ethical Review for Social Science research, and Qualitative Methods. Data management may seem daunting but once you have a grasp of the concepts introduced in this course, it will allow you to work more efficiently and help you to identify and address any issues before you start a project. This course is designed to provide you with some data management strategies that you can immediately implement into your research process.

Format

This module will be held in person and is limited to 20 places.

Learning outcomes

After this session, participants will:

  • Recognise how research data management is relevant to the different modules offered by the SSRMP
  • Be able to analyse the options available to choose the best mode of storing and backing up research data in ways that comply with their funder
  • Be able to immediately apply strategies of data management that will increase their efficiency as a researcher
  • Understand the best strategies for working with sensitive data, such as attaining the appropriate consent and anonymising datasets
  • Understand how to prepare datasets for research data sharing to maximise research impact
  • Understand what a Data Management Plan (DMP) is and how your research will benefit from one

Moodle

Moodle is the 'Virtual Learning Environment' (VLE) that CaRM uses to deliver online courses.

CaRM instructors use Moodle to make teaching resources available before, during, and/or after classes, and to make announcements and answer questions.

For this reason, it is vital that all students enrol onto and explore their course Moodle pages once booking their CaRM modules via the UTBS, and that they do so before their module begins. Moodle pages for modules should go live around a week before the module commences, but some may be made visible to students earlier.

Frequency

This module is run in Michaelmas Term and then repeated in Lent Term. You only need to book on ONE of these iterations, either in Michaelmas OR in Lent.
