A series of 30 minute drop-in sessions to talk with one of the Simplifying our Processes team. We offer expert, impartial advice relating all things process improvement and want to support our colleagues on their own continuous improvement journeys.

Please note, these sessions are informal, 1-2-1 meetings where colleagues can ask for advice and guidance from the Simplifying our Processes team. These are not workshops or taught sessions.

The Simplifying our Processes team will be available 9-10 and 4-5 every Tuesday and Friday - each hour can be split into two sessions of 30 minutes depending on demand.

This course will enable the participants to practice existing spreadsheet skills and develop more advanced skills within the context of UFS data. There will be the opportunity to extract data from the system and learn to manipulate, analyse and use it for reporting purposes. The course runs over two sessions and participants will need to attend both of these sessions.

This module will introduce you to the theory and practice of multivariate analysis, covering Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) and logistic regressions. You will learn how to read published results critically, to do simple multivariate modelling yourself , and to interpret and write about your results intelligently.

Half of the module is based in the lecture theatre, and covers the theory behind multivariate regression; the other half is lab-based, in which students will work through practical exercises using statistical software.

To get the most out of the course, you should also expect to spend some time between sessions having fun by building your own statistical models.

The “Networking and Profile Building” virtual workshop series was created as a collaboration between Queen’s University Belfast, Queen Mary University London, University of Cambridge, King’s College London, University of Nottingham, Imperial College London, University of Glasgow and University of Cardiff. Participants will learn effective tools for successfully growing and nurturing their networks and will have the opportunity to put their skills into practice with researchers from the above listed universities, as well as with a number of other guest professionals, as part of the training.

The five sessions, running between 28th January and 22nd February, were designed to be complementary and are meant to be attended as a series. Visit this website for further details about the five sessions:

This weekly class is intended to help research students in the Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences to develop their skills in reading German documents they need to deal with in their research. Each session will be divided into two parts:

The first part will consist of grammar, tasks to develop insight into the reading process, help with dealing with complex sentence structures, academic conventions, abbreviations, etc.

The second part will be devoted to the translation of original German texts from different periods and covering a range of topics. Each week you will be asked to attempt a translation into English of a German passage. Students will be encouraged to bring along German texts from their own research to translate.

Successfully pitching your work: This online interactive workshop provides guidance and feedback on sharing your research clearly and effectively in spontaneous and prepared situations.

In addition to being proficient communicators in academic settings, there is also a need for Engineers to further develop and diversify their communication skills to suit a range of professional settings (Almeida, 2019).

The Lent term masterclass series focuses on communicating with impact, adapting effectively to audiences across academic and professional settings and using business English successfully. This series consists of the following workshops:

  • Successfully pitching your work
  • Interacting effectively & managing meetings
  • Presenting yourself successfully
  • Negotiating with clients

Research has identified that the ability to verbally express ideas clearly and the capacity to work confidently in a group are the two key skills for employability. This series of workshops focuses on aspects of these skills most pertinent to Engineers at Cambridge.

An Introduction to Research Data Management Skills with Dr Curtis Sharma

Simply put, research data is anything that helps to eventually form the basis of your research output. The integrity of our research outputs therefore depends on the integrity of our data. This is one reason why Increased importance is being placed on research data management (RDM). Managing your research data well brings other benefits, however. It helps in structuring your research project, keeping your data safe and secure, making it easier to share data during and after your project, and it is simply good academic practice. In these sessions we will explore what we mean by RDM, looking at storage and backup, organisation, archiving, and sharing. In the first session we will work to achieve a strong basic understanding of RDM. In the second session, we’ll look at these in more detail.

There is an increased emphasis on managing and sharing data produced in research. Many of the research funders supporting work at the University of Cambridge require that research data are openly available with as few restrictions as possible.

Research data management is a complex issue, but done correctly from the start, could save you a lot of time and hassle at the end of the project; when preparing your data for a publication or writing up your thesis. Research data takes many forms, ranging from measurements, numbers and images to documents and publications.

This module aims to help you get started with managing your data by introducing you to key principles around organising, storing, archiving and sharing your data. You will also learn how to create your own Data Management Plan.

PLEASE NOTE The Bioinformatics Team are presently teaching many courses live online, with tutors available to help you work through the course material on a personal copy of the course environment. We continue to monitor advice from the UK government and the University of Cambridge on resuming in-person teaching back in the training room.

Using the Linux operating system and the bash command line interface, we will demonstrate the basic structure of the UNIX operating system and how we can interact with it using a basic set of commands. Applying this, we will learn how to navigate the filesystem, manipulate text-based data and structure simple pipelines out of these commands.

Building on the techniques learnt so far, we will then construct bash scripts combining the commands and structures already learnt into more complex, reusable tools. We will look at how we can apply these scripts to common problems faced in UNIX environments such as: communicating with remote servers; managing custom software installations and integrating these tools into our simple pipelines.

This course is targeted at participants with no prior experience working with UNIX-like systems (OSX, Linux) or command line interfaces.
