Working with Bacterial Genomes (IN-PERSON) new (4 of 5) Finished 09:30 - 17:30 Bioinformatics Training Room, Craik-Marshall Building

This comprehensive course equips you with essential skills and knowledge in bacterial genomics analysis, primarily using Illumina-sequenced samples. You'll gain an understanding of how to select the most appropriate analysis workflow, tailored to the genome diversity of a given bacterial species. Through hands-on training, you'll apply both de novo assembly and reference-based mapping approaches to obtain bacterial genomes for your isolates. You will apply standardised workflows for genome assembly and annotation, including quality assessment criteria to ensure the reliability of your results. Along with typing bacteria using methods such as MLST, you'll learn how to construct phylogenetic trees using whole genome and core genome alignments, enabling you to explore the evolutionary relationships among bacterial isolates. You’ll extend this to estimate a time-scaled phylogeny using a starting phylogenetic tree. Lastly, you'll apply methods to detect antimicrobial resistance genes. As examples we will use Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae, allowing you to become well-equipped to conduct bacterial genomics analyses on a range of species.

We will discuss the benefits of mentoring and provide guidance on how to set objectives for the mentoring relationship and how to prepare for your first session together. We will also offer some tips about how to be a good mentee and mentor.

Supporting People Through Change (Live Online) Finished 11:00 - 12:30 HRTP MS Teams 01

During change we often focus on what will be delivered and if it will be right for the job, but we often focus less on the need to support, reassure, and motivate those impacted by change – the people side of change.

This short session for staff with people-management responsibilities (including PIs, supervisors and team leads) will explore approaches to the people side of change in the context of the University. Whilst high-level sponsorship provides senior leadership and the rationale for change, research shows that direct line managers have the most influence on how their team respond to change by helping to support people in understanding, preparing for, and adopting changes in working life and practice. “Change happens one person at a time.” Prosci.com.

Using the HR Transformation Programme and the introduction of myHR as an example, we will look at how the approaches we are using to support colleagues across the University can be applied to the changes you may be leading in your team or area.

Join us to consider skills and techniques for supporting people through change, using consistent language to help build our individual and collective change capability, for the everyday changes and for the more significant ones.

Student Mental Health Awareness Training new Finished 13:00 - 17:00 Jesus College, Webb Library

This 4-hour mental health awareness training is intended for frontline staff at Colleges and Academic Faculties/Departments whose roles are pastoral or include responsibilities for responding to student welfare.

The session offers:

  • A brief overview of student mental health in Higher Education.
  • Best practice guidance on identifying and responding to students who may be experiencing mental health difficulties.
  • Context-specific case vignettes and scenarios to improve staff confidence in intervening and applying skills in discussions with students, including those who may be experiencing poor wellbeing, mental ill-health and thoughts of suicide.
  • Evidence-based and practical strategies for promoting student and staff wellbeing, including self-care for staff.
  • Key resources and services in place to support mental health locally and nationally.

Please note these are stand-alone training sessions and participants should only attend one session.


This training is provided free of charge to College and University staff thanks to a philanthropic donation. The cost of providing the course is £25 per participant.

This course is mainly aimed at undergraduate students writing their first thesis, but is also suitable for staff who need to write a long document. It is designed to give an insight and hands on practice into the more advanced features of Microsoft Word that are relevant to producing substantial reports.

Radioactive Substances: An Introduction to Suitable and Safe Use Finished 14:15 - 16:45 Department of Biochemistry, Thomas Lecture Theatre

Anyone who is a first-time user of unsealed radioactive substances is expected to attend this acquaintanceship course before they begin the work. Users of radioactive substances who are new to the University should also attend. This course also acts as a refresher for experienced users and for users from other institutions or countries. There will be time for discussion and questions at the end of the session. You will be required to complete a short quiz after the course to confirm your understanding of core aspects of radiation safety.

Our online retreats give you time, peace, and space to think and write. Each session will provide a friendly and constructive environment in which to meet like-minded peers, discuss challenges, and work in a focused way using the Pomodoro technique.

These virtual retreats are being hosted collaboratively across several institutions to encourage researchers across career stages and institutions to come together in a sustainable writing environment.

This 1 hour, instructor-led session will walk you through the different pages you need to complete in the Funding Management Portal to publish your fund for the coming year.

This session is the first part of learning how to use the FMP to advertise and manage your funds: Module 1 – Adding and Editing.

You will be shown how to enter your funds into the system to be published on the PG Funding Search, potentially appear to applicants in their admissions applications (in GAP), which fields you can fill in to determine eligibility and how this process can bring your team value as the admissions cycle commences.

The rollover period in the system to 2024-25 advertising starts on the 15th July, and the deadline for entry for funds that wish to appear to applicants in GAP (and be published in the PG Funding Search for the beginning of September) is 19th August.

This training is appropriate not only for colleagues new to the FMP, but also for returning users as we have made some updates to the system since the previous year.

Your presenter will tailor this training to the attending audience to give the best experience, and our team will be available to support you in using the FMP throughout the academic year. We will also publish dates and times of ‘drop-in’ sessions for further support, which will not require a booking.

The Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) team have partnered with a specialist external provider, to develop some online training modules for the University of Cambridge. Whilst the training is up to date with the latest legislation, advice and information, we have an opportunity to significantly tailor the package, to help it resonate with staff across our academic and professional services communities.

We’d love your help, to understand any aspects you really like, (or don’t!) and where we might make changes to give each of the modules a University of Cambridge ‘look and feel’. The session will be fairly fast-paced, with a high-level review of each module and a closer look at each of the proposed videos. We'll offer the opportunity for participants to provide individual comments and also group feedback, based on breakout room discussions.

Moodle as the Virtual Learning Environment is supporting teaching and learning at the University.

One of the key principles in the University's implementation of Moodle is devolved control. Moodle is used by a large number of Faculties, Departments, Colleges, and other offices, and each area will have its own specialist knowledge and specific requirements. Devolved control will enable each institution to have control over the courses they built and their location in the Course structure.

As such, each Institution has at least one Moodle Coordinator (we recommend two). Moodle Coordinators manage all the courses within their category of Faculty, Department or College; they can do anything in any course they have control of, including create new courses, edit existing courses, and add teachers. Coordinators will also act as a first line of support - offering help and advice to the users in their area.

This is a training course aimed at users who are current Coordinators or are planning to become Coordinators. During the interactive course participants will practice how to create subcategories and courses, how to backup and restore their courses, how to enrol cohorts of users, and how to archive their courses in the Course History environment.
