Please note, these sessions are informal, 1-2-1 meetings where colleagues can ask for advice and guidance from the Simplifying our Processes team. These are not workshops or taught sessions. The Simplifying our Processes team will be available 9-10 and 4-5 every Tuesday and Friday - each hour can be split into two sessions of 30 minutes depending on demand. |

The Bioinformatics Team are presently teaching this course live online, with tutors available to help you throughout if have any questions. We continue to monitor advice from the UK government and the University of Cambridge on resuming in-person teaching in our training room. This award winning virtually delivered course is intended to provide a strong foundation in practical statistics and data analysis using the R software environment. The underlying philosophy of the course is to treat statistics as a practical skill rather than as a theoretical subject and as such the course focuses on methods for addressing real-life issues in the biological sciences. There are three core goals for this course:
R is an open source programming language so all of the software we will use in the course is free. In this course, we explore classical statistical analysis techniques starting with simple hypothesis testing and building up to linear models and power analyses. The focus of the course is on practical implementation of these techniques and developing robust statistical analysis skills rather than on the underlying statistical theory. After the course you should feel confident to be able to select and implement common statistical techniques using R and moreover know when, and when not, to apply these techniques. This class is intended to help research students in the Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences to develop their skills in reading German documents they need to deal with in their research. Each session will be divided into two parts: The first part will consist of grammar, tasks to develop insight into the reading process, help with dealing with complex sentence structures, academic conventions, abbreviations, etc. The second part will be devoted to the translation of original German texts from different periods and covering a range of topics. Each week you will be asked to attempt a translation into English of a German passage. Students will be encouraged to bring along German texts from their own research to translate. There are different aspects you have to take into consideration when preparing to address diverse audiences, such as how they want to be persuaded, the appropriate style of the language to use and how to gain professional credibility in their eyes. In our interactive session, we will share tools and techniques that will allow you to adapt your content and delivery style to the different needs and expectations of the diverse teams in the modern workplace. You will find out how to: • Analyse your audience; • Structure your presentation in an easy-to-follow way; • Adapt your content (language, references, examples, types of evidence, visuals) to communicate your message to a diverse audience; • Use your voice to help your audience better understand the content and follow it with ease. These are informal conversation practice sessions where learners take it in turns to choose a topic for the session and prepare some relevant questions. Whether you are learning from a resource or a class, you could use it as a chance to repeat your practice of a topic you have learned, such as an everyday conversation about where you are all from. Alternatively, you could take it as an opportunity to branch out and experiment with discussing a new idea or issue that interests you. A native speaker facilitator is there to provide support in sustaining conversation and to give you feedback on your language. These sessions will allow you to practise spoken Arabic while finding topics written in Modern Standard Arabic. |

Please note that the Conversation Hours will be delivered online This conversation hour offers learners with an independent conversational ability (B2/C1 level upwards) a chance to practice speaking Spanish with others in a relaxed and informal group led by a native-speaker facilitator. The content of the sessions is decided by the participants, with members taking turns to propose a topic and source materials (newspaper articles, web links, videos etc.) to use as a basis for discussion. The groups are ideal for those who wish to retain or improve upon the language skills they already have or for those studying for a language degree who would like another forum for interaction at advanced level. Participants from Spanish Advanced CULP and Advanced plus through film and literature are warmly invited to attend the Spanish Conversation Hour. The Bioinformatics Team are presently teaching many courses live online, with tutors available to help you work through the course material on a personal copy of the course environment. We continue to monitor advice from the UK government and the University of Cambridge on resuming in-person teaching back in the training room. This course provides a practical introduction to the writing of Python programs for the complete novice. Participants are lead through the core concepts of Python including Python syntax, data structures and reading/writing files. These are illustrated by a series of example programs. Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to write simple Python programs. Please note that if you are not eligible for a University of Cambridge Raven account you will need to book or register your interest by linking here. |

Before undertaking any piece of primary research it’s important to be aware of as much of the existing literature as possible. A systematic literature review can also be a research end in itself. And it’s not something to be taken lightly. But how can you be sure you’re being as rigorous as necessary? How can you manage the references you find, document the process, and also know when to stop searching? This session assumes attendees have already had prior introductory training in literature searching. It is a prerequisite that you have attended either Introduction to Literature Searching (if you are a University of Cambridge staff member or student) or Getting the Best Results - Improving Your Database Searching (if you are an NHS staff member). Exceptions will be made if you received similar training from another department or university - please contact us if you have any questions about prerequisites. UPDATE: Please note that this session is taking place remotely, not in the Medical Library as previously advertised. Please do not go to the Medical Library training room. You will be contacted by the training team with information about how to join the session remotely. Please note: this session may be recorded. Using close reading and translation of academic texts from their particular discipline, this weekly class is intended to help research students in the Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences to develop their skills in reading Spanish documents that they have come across or may meet in their research. The course aims to develop strategies for reading longer texts faster through close analysis, grammatical and stylistic commentary, and translation. For example, literary texts with differing editions, stories with two or more translations into English that need to be compared and evaluated, poems of challenging originality or range of allusion. This discussion based workshop will provide an opportunity for an update on the recent exciting additions to support for disabled library users and the work of the DRC. As a response to the unusual circumstances we are all finding ourselves in the majority of the workshop will build on example scenarios to discuss and get feedback on the most accessible and effective strategies for the pandemic and beyond. The workshop will be delivered by Patrick Dowson (Accessibility Services Manager) and Lindsay Jones (Accessibility Services Coordinator) from the Libraries Accessibility Services team. They are dedicated to providing equal library access for all students across the university, including providing alternate formats for disabled students. They will be joined by Kirsty Wayland, Disability Development Consultant at the DRC. This session will be on line via Microsoft Teams. |

The syllabus is more topical and the contents feature many a cultural, historical, political and current affairs theme.
