The Unix shell (command line) is a powerful and essential tool for modern researchers, in particular those working in computational disciplines such as bioinformatics and large-scale data analysis. In this course we will explore the basic structure of the Unix operating system and how we can interact with it using a basic set of commands. You will learn how to navigate the filesystem, manipulate text-based data and combine multiple commands to quickly extract information from large data files. You will also learn how to write scripts and use programmatic techniques to automate task repetition.

Core Statistics using R or Python (IN-PERSON)

This award winning course is intended to provide a strong foundation in practical statistics and data analysis using the R or Python software environment. The underlying philosophy of the course is to treat statistics as a practical skill rather than as a theoretical subject and as such the course focuses on methods for addressing real-life issues in the life sciences. There are three core goals for this course:
R and Python are open source programming languages so all of the software we will use in the course is free. In this course, we explore classical statistical analysis techniques starting with simple hypothesis testing and building up to linear models and power analyses. The focus of the course is on practical implementation of these techniques and developing robust statistical analysis skills rather than on the underlying statistical theory. After the course you should feel confident to be able to select and implement common statistical techniques using R or Python and moreover know when, and when not, to apply these techniques.

This course will enable the participants to practice existing spreadsheet skills and develop more advanced skills within the context of UFS data. There will be the opportunity to extract data from the system and learn to manipulate, analyse and use it for reporting purposes. The course runs over two sessions and participants will need to attend both of these sessions. |

Introducing the Learn module in myHR

The HR Transformation Programme will introduce myHR, the University’s new HR and payroll system in 2026 (see Introducing myHR). myHR will bring benefits for all employees, including Learn, a learning module that University employees can use to find and book training, plus lots of other functionality. Learn will be introduced as part of the second deployment of myHR (late 2026). This meeting is for those who deliver and adminster learning and development for employees in the University (across all training providers who are currently using UTBS or other systems). We will provide an overview of myHR, including the changes ahead for employees and training providers. Further engagement will follow during 2025, including the opportunity to join a community of other training providers. Her recent book, "The Leader's Guide to Wellbeing" outlines different techniques leaders can use to get positive affect. Her practical and easily applicable tools for real results are often the standout feature, along with her motivational training style and unique approach to workshops using interactive training methods. Administered by the Language Centre, the AJ Pressland Fund offers bursaries of up to £1,000 to support language study abroad for students within the Schools of Biological Science, Clinical Medicine, Physical Science and Technology. Those applying for a Trinity College Language Bursary are also welcome to attend. The aim of this optional workshop is to support with choosing a short language course abroad. We can offer pointers for evaluating the options available and share information gleaned from students' feedback on courses that they have attended. Students should be planning to study a language overseas for up to 4 weeks during the Long Vacation and funds awarded may be used to support course fees, accommodation and travel as required. |

Anyone who is a first-time user of unsealed radioactive substances is expected to attend this acquaintanceship course before they begin the work. Users of radioactive substances who are new to the University should also attend. This course also acts as a refresher for experienced users and for users from other institutions or countries. There will be time for discussion and questions at the end of the session. You will be required to complete a short quiz after the course to confirm your understanding of core aspects of radiation safety. The I-Act course for managers is aimed at supporting managers to improve workplace wellbeing and helping them to support employees who may experience a mental health or wellbeing issue. The training maintains a focus on common mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression, and addresses how we might improve wellbeing in order to build resilience. The course gives practical guidance and tools for how we might improve our own mental health and wellbeing and support others who may have a mental health or wellbeing issue. It informs participants as to what they need to know and offers tools for addressing and improving mental health and wellbeing in the workplace. This training highlights what managers need to know about managing mental health in the workplace (for example, regarding legislation and The Health and Safety Executive). This training is intended for staff and post graduate students who regularly use DSE to help prevent or reduce the risk of possible health problems arising from computer use. The training is also aimed at those responsible within departments for assisting with the DSE risk assessment process. The course will provide an understanding of the DSE Regulations 1992 (as amended 2002) and discuss employer's and employee's duties regarding the assessment of DSE workstations. There will be theory and a practical demonstration. The training will allow time to discuss some of the common health problems and concerns that may be associated with poor workstation set-up with examples of possible solutions. |
