If you miss the present moment, you miss your appointment with life. ― Thich Nhat Hanh,

It is easy to rush through the day without noticing our thoughts, feelings and sensations. Mindfulness practice helps us pause and become present, so we get in touch with our authentic experience. We can so easily become entangled in energy draining thoughts that drive our emotions and lead to stress or anxiety. Mindfulness practice helps us notice these thoughts so we can deal with them better. Mindfulness is recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). See NHS Mental Health

Esther Hunt is a Lecturer in the Faculty of Education, Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Registered Psychotherapist. She has been teaching Mindfulness for 5 years and was instructed by bestselling author Dr Patrizia Collard. She provides sessions for HR staff wellbeing services, school leadership teams, University students, and in the charity sector. Esther presented at the Festival of Wellbeing in 2021.

What are Unconscious biases?

Unconscious biases are the views and opinions that we are unaware of, influenced by our background, culture and personal experiences that affect our everyday behaviour and decision making. It is therefore important that we recognise and understand the impact of our Unconscious biases, and know how to prevent them occurring in the workplace - this is particularly key in the context of recruitment and promotions.

Suicide: Inevitable or Preventable? new Fri 10 Sep 2021   12:30 Finished

Suicide Prevention Day - 10 September

Suicide could impact your life at any time and without warning. But is suicide inevitable?

As we mark World Suicide Prevention Day 2021, this presentation, delivered by Yvonne McPartland and Sarah Hughes from the Staff Counselling Centre, aims to increase awareness around suicide, dispel some myths and share some lessons from experience at the Staff Counselling Centre.

The session is designed to give staff and students the confidence to challenge the taboo around suicide that makes it such a difficult subject to broach, with colleagues, family members, friends and even total strangers: What is it OK to say? What should I be looking for? What should I do next?

The message is that having a conversation could really save a life. Let’s challenge the taboo and have a conversation that may empower you to intervene and potentially save a life.

Resources and further information:

This year, to mark World Suicide Prevention Day, Yvonne McPartland, Deputy Head of the Staff Counselling Centre, will be delivering a session on suicide prevention for staff in Cambridge.

The shocking reality is that suicide is the most common cause of death in men aged under 50 and the suicide rate is currently increasing after many years of decline. This equates to more than 6,000 deaths by suicide annually in the UK and Ireland.

What impact will Covid-19 have on suicide numbers?

The session is designed to give staff the confidence to challenge the taboo around suicide that makes it such a difficult subject to broach, with colleagues, family members, friends and even total strangers: what is it OK to say, what should I be looking for and what should I do next?

The session will increase awareness around suicide, dispel some myths and share some lessons from experience at the Staff Counselling Centre. It will also remind staff what the centre can offer them.

The message is that having a conversation could really save a life.

Resources and further information:

This session will provide staff in HR related roles with an overview of how to best support managers with staff who are about to go on, or return from, a period of family leave.
