In November 2019, the University’s commitment to address systemic racism was acknowledged with an Advance HE Race Equality Charter (REC) Bronze award. The  University’s REC submission  openly admitted that there are serious issues that we need to tackle, and we are addressing these through the institutional three-year  REC action plan and many other important initiatives led by students and staff.

We are now over a year into the implementation of our race equality action plan, which is an appropriate point to reflect on what has been achieved so far – and what remains to be done.

Speakers at the event include the Vice-Chancellor Professor Stephen Toope, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Eilís Ferran, Race Equality Champions Dr Mónica Moreno Figueroa and Dr Kamal Munir, and the Chairs of the BAME Staff Network Professor Franklin Aigbirhio and Dr Rabia Dada-Oughton.

Racketball is the UK’s fastest growing sport!

It is played on any regular squash court and is similar to squash. The fact that the ball is bigger, more bouncy, and does not need warming up means that the rallies last longer. The shorter racket also helps with hand eye coordination making the ball easier to strike. If you fancy giving racketball a try, then come and join us for this taster session.

Changing facilities are available on site and the Sports Service can provide a racket and ball if you need one. Please wear indoor trainers.

Neurodiversity includes the specific learning differences -dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD and Autism.

In this talk Professor Sara Rankin explores the strengths and weaknesses associated with being neurodiverse and how this plays out in the Universities and businesses for students, researchers, managers, postgraduate students and administrators.

She will talk about some of the educational and outreach projects she is currently working on for ND students, at Imperial College London. She will also outline the steps that line managers can take to support their ND staff and give an overview of some of the assistive technologies that can help.

Sara Rankin is a Professor in NHLI, FoM working in the field of Regenerative Pharmacology. She is dyslexic and dyspraxic.

This session is for staff in HR related roles and will:

• Introduce the Recruitment Policy, including the key principles that underpin good recruitment practice.
• Explore how to write an effective recruitment advert, in terms of structure and content.
• Present analysis of recruitment advertising at the University and suggest methods of effective advertising practice.

Talking about 'race' and racism is difficult as these issues are complex and rarely discussed particularly by White people. Our research and a number of national inquiries show that BAME staff and students experience racism more frequently than is reported.

Come along to this event to learn about the Collegiate and University systems that are in place to report and investigate racial discrimination. We will also discuss patterns in experiencing and reporting racism at the University and nationally.
