Budgeting part 2: Creating and monitoring budgets in CUFS and Cognos CANCELLED 09:30 - 13:00 Finance Division, Greenwich House, Ferrara Room (IT Training Room)

This session covers how to make a financial plan, prepare it for upload to the finance system and monitor progress against the plan. It is a practical course which will look at the techniques and systems within the University that can be used for budgeting.

It is an ideal follow on from Budgeting part 1 and for those who have a good working knowledge of budgeting principles and want to develop skills in using the University budgeting tools.

This course will enable the participants to practice existing spreadsheet skills and develop more advanced skills within the context of UFS data. There will be the opportunity to extract data from the system and learn to manipulate, analyse and use it for reporting purposes. The course runs over two sessions and participants will need to attend both of these sessions.

PLEASE NOTE The Bioinformatics Team are presently teaching as many courses live online, with tutors available to help you work through the course material on a personal copy of the course environment. We aim to simulate the classroom experience as closely as possible, with opportunities for one-to-one discussion with tutors and a focus on interactivity throughout.

This course provides a practical introduction to the writing of Python programs for the complete novice. Participants are lead through the core aspects of Python illustrated by a series of example programs. Upon completion of the course, attentive participants will be able to write simple Python programs and customize more complex code to fit their needs.

Please note that the content of this course has recently been updated. This course now mostly focuses on core concepts including Python syntax, data structures and reading/writing files. Concepts and strategies for working more effectively with Python are now the focus of a new 2-days course, Data Science in Python.

The RD team are offering one-to-one meetings online over the coming weeks for all postdocs. These meetings will be tailored to your individual needs and provide an opportunity to consider and discuss topics relating to learning, skills and personal development. This is not an exhaustive list but topics may include a variety of issues including:

  • Managing your time whilst working from home
  • Collaborating effectively
  • Maintaining resilience and coping strategies
  • Reflecting on and identifying your key areas for development


Each meeting will last for up to 45 minutes and, given the present circumstances relating to Covid-19, will be conducted online using Teams or Zoom.

Departmental health and safety induction for people starting at the Department of Physics between July and end of September 2020.

Session 1 of this briefing is for everyone and covers what to do in the event of an emergency, and how to report problems.

There will be a short break before Session 2, which is for people carrying out practical experiments in a laboratory, doing other practical (e.g. maintenance) work, managing events or other people.

Medicine: Writing a Systematic Review Protocol (for University and NHS) new Finished 14:00 - 15:30 Cambridge University Libraries Online

Publishing a protocol -- stating in advance the search strategy, inclusion and exclusion criteria, data analysis and other evaluative techniques -- is a core requirement for conducting a systematic review. The process of writing this protocol will also mean you have written in advance a large chunk of what will need to go into the finished systematic review, saving you a huge amount of time.

This session will cover the contents and types of information you will need to provide in your protocol, and will give attendees the opportunity to write a draft protocol, as well as highlighting helpful resources and further support.

This course will introduce graduate students, early-career researchers, and professionals in the humanities to the technologies of image recognition and machine vision, including recent developments in machine vision research in the past half-decade. The course will seek to combine a technical understanding of how machine vision systems work, with a detailed understanding of the possibilities they open to research and study in the humanities, and with a critical exploration of the social, political and ideological dimensions of machine vision.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, students should be able to:

  • Understand the basic tasks of machine vision, such as Image Classification, Object Detection, Image-to-Image Translation, Image Captioning, Image Segmentation etc.
  • Understand the fundamental technical operations of image processing and machine vision: the pixel encoding of images, Gaussian and convolutional filters,
  • Explore critical aspects of machine vision in a technically-informed way: e.g. the problems in algorithmic bias brought about by featureless convolutional networks
  • Develop and run their own simple machine vision and image processing pipelines, in a visual programming language compiling to Python
  • Understand the potential synergies and limitations of machine vision applications in humanities research and cultural heritage institutions

Machine learning gives computers the ability to learn without being explicitly programmed. It encompasses a broad range of approaches to data analysis with applicability across the biological sciences. Lectures will introduce commonly used algorithms and provide insight into their theoretical underpinnings. In the practicals students will apply these algorithms to real biological data-sets using the R language and environment.

Medicine: Systematic Literature Reviews - A 'How To' Guide (for University and NHS) Finished 10:00 - 12:00 Cambridge University Libraries Online

Before undertaking any piece of primary research it’s important to be aware of as much of the existing literature as possible. A systematic literature review can also be a research end in itself. And it’s not something to be taken lightly. But how can you be sure you’re being as rigorous as necessary? How can you manage the references you find, document the process, and also know when to stop searching?

This session assumes attendees have already had prior introductory training in literature searching. It is a prerequisite that you have attended either Introduction to Literature Searching (if you are a University of Cambridge staff member or student) or Getting the Best Results - Improving Your Database Searching (if you are an NHS staff member). Exceptions will be made if you received similar training from another department or university - please contact us if you have any questions about prerequisites.

Game Design: an introduction for researchers [remote delivery] new (4 of 4) Finished 16:00 - 17:00 Cambridge Digital Humanities Online

Emma Reay is a third-year PhD researcher at the University of Cambridge and an associate lecturer at Anglia Ruskin University. Her current project explores depictions of children in videogames, and her research interests include representation studies, children's digital media, gaming and education, and playful activism.

Adam Dixon is a game designer and writer who makes both physical and digital games. He has worked on everything from big public games that involve running around cities to narrative video games about learning scientific skills. Much of his work has involved working with museums and research organisations such as the Wellcome Trust, Science Museum, Nottingham Trent University and the V&A. This has included designing games, using play for public research engagement and most recently, teaching teenagers to create digital games for Wellcome Collection’s Play Well exhibition. Outside of that he works and releases his own games including roleplaying games, LARPs and interactive fiction.

This online course will introduce participants to the practice of game design. It will explore the different ways that digital and analogue games are designed, particularly how you can design with intent to communicate a mood, theme or message. Participants will learn game design skills - such as boxing-in, design documents and prototyping – alongside opportunities to test them out by creating their own short games. Examples will focus on game design in research-related contexts, including using games as part of your research process and to communicate research outcomes to diverse audiences.

The sessions focus on game design, how to shape mechanics and play experiences, so no technical skills are needed. Participants will create their short games using both non-digital tools and simple, free software that will be taught in the sessions.
