This lunch and learn session will explore Chinese names. How to pronounce them. What it says about the person. The stories behind names. The focus will be on pronunciation but you will also be welcome to share your own experience and tell your stories.

Cultural Awareness and Living in Britain

This practical seminar provides a further opportunity for participants to learn more about key aspects of living in Britain. As in the previous seminar (Michaelmas Term 2019), it will focus on the intercultural understanding needed to study and work successfully within the University environment; it will also focus more widely on aspects of British life and culture, considering any topics (e.g. tourism, history, politics, class, customs) that participants would like to discuss, and drawing where possible on their impressions and experiences. Those who attended the previous seminar are welcome, and all participants are encouraged to email any questions or particular areas of interest in advance to Sheila Dodds (smd48).

In this workshop we will cover the correct use of punctuation in English including the comma, colon, semi-colon and hyphen. Through looking at published papers, we'll analyse punctuation in the Engineering field and then put everything into practice.

Holding the reader in mind is key to good writing. In this workshop we will analyse attributes of a reader in order to create better pieces of writing. In doing so we will cover the danger of overload, clarity in developing ideas and the use of conventions in scientific writing.

This is a two-week course which includes individual supervisions. It focuses on your own drafts of first year report, thesis, or research paper.

Week 1 comprises five 2-hour whole-class lessons, one each morning, and concentrates on writing abstracts, literature reviews, discussions and conclusions and on preparing poster presentations. It also includes one individual supervision of 30 minutes which will take place on one of the following afternoons: Thursday 17 July 2.30-4.30, or Friday 18 July 2.30-4.30.

In Week 2 there will be one 2-hour whole-class lesson on Thursday afternoon based on points arising from students’ work-in-progress, plus one individual supervision of an hour. The time of this will be arranged with the teacher at the start of the course and will be held at one of the following times: Monday, 21st July 2.30-4.30pm, Tuesday, 22nd July 11.30-1.30pm or 2.30-4.30pm, Wednesday, 23rd July 2.30-4.30pm.

• Please send in drafts of your own work for feedback. These can be any part of your report, dissertation or paper - or any other piece of scientific writing that is important to you.
• Please send in these drafts well in advance of the course start (at least a week!).
