The traditional account of Constantine’s vision before the battle of the Milvian Bridge (AD 312) is a legend created by the uncritical synthesis of three quite different historical accounts based in part on speculative textual emendations of the sources. My paper will examine critically these sources, and question the centrality of the image of the Christogram on which their synthesis has been based. |
