How to write an academic paper and get it published (Life Sciences) CANCELLED 09:30 - 16:30 Postdoc Centre@ Mill Lane, Seminar Room

The course takes an evidence-based approach to writing. Participants will learn that publishing is a game and the more they understand the rules of the game the higher their chances of becoming publishing authors. They will learn that writing an academic article and getting it published may help with their careers but it does not make them better researchers, or cleverer than they were before their paper was accepted; it simply means they have played the game well.

Suitable for GSLS postgraduates in any discipline who are keen to learn how to write academic papers and articles efficiently as well as more established researchers who have had papers rejected and are not really sure why.

This course covers concepts and strategies for working more effectively with Python with the aim of writing reusable code, using function and libraries. Participants will acquire a working knowledge of key concepts which are prerequisites for advanced programming in Python e.g. writing modules and classes.

Note: this course is the continuation of the Introduction to Solving Biological Problems with Python; participants are expected to have attended the introductory Python course and/or have acquired some working knowledge of Python. This class is intended to help research students in the Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences to develop their skills in reading German documents they need to deal with in their research. Each session will be divided into two parts:

The first part will consist of grammar, tasks to develop insight into the reading process, help with dealing with complex sentence structures, academic conventions, abbreviations, etc.

The second part will be devoted to the translation of original German texts from different periods and covering a range of topics. Each week you will be asked to attempt a translation into English of a German passage. Students will be encouraged to bring along German texts from their own research to translate.

If you occasionally suffer from vocal strain or wish to discover your true vocal range and power then this course is for you. We will work together to improve your vocal projection using vocal techniques practised by actors by using various physical and vocal exercises. We will discuss using your voice in a recording or speaking to camera and practice exercises for improved articulation. Be prepared to join in the exercises and makes some noise!

Turning your thesis into a book (Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences) new CANCELLED 10:00 - 12:30 17 Mill Lane, Seminar Room B

When we talk about turning a thesis into a ‘book’, we are really talking about a ‘monograph’. In keeping with the etymological sense of the word, a monograph is generally considered a written work that focuses on one specialised subject with a view to contributing original insight and knowledge.

Given a doctoral thesis – particularly in the arts, humanities and social sciences – is a dedicated study on one specialised topic or area of research, it stands to reason that it is a kind of proto-monograph. This course is concerned with turning a proto-monograph into a fully-fledged and published monograph, i.e. a book. The aim, therefore, is to familiarise students with the process of, and the various issues involved with, turning their PhD thesis into a published monograph.

This course is open to all years, but is better suited for students close to completion.

This week-long training will focus on Public Engagement and Policy. The week will start with a first session introducing the policy sector, possible forms of policy collaboration for researchers and professionals, the skills and competences needed and practical tips to immediately start your policy engagement. Because of the current context requiring many of us to work from home, the second session will be specifically dedicated to „branding“ yourself online when reaching out to relevant policy actors. The third session will consist of an interactive meeting during which participants will pitch their research to stress its policy relevance. Instructions will be circulated during the week. There will also be available slots for personal and group mentoring. The training is open to early and mid career researchers and professional staff willing to enhance their understanding of policy engagement.

This training will be led by Dr. Maja Spanu, a Junior Research Fellow in International Relations in Cambridge and postdoc lead for Humanities and Social Science fort the University’s Public Engagement Advisory Group.

This conversation hour offers learners with an independent conversational ability (B2/C1 level upwards) a chance to practice speaking Spanish with others in a relaxed and informal group led by a native-speaker facilitator. Bug Hunt 2020 [cancelled - Covid 19] new (4 of 5) CANCELLED 13:00 - 15:00 Cambridge University Library, IT Training Room

This programme is an opportunity to learn, through practical experience and shared investigation, how to apply digital methods for exploring and analysing a body of archival texts. The core of the programme will be 5 x 2 hour classroom based sessions supplemented by group and individual work on tasks related to the project design, delivery and documentation in between sessions. In addition to attending all five face-to-face sessions, participants should set aside an additional 8-10 hours over the duration of the course for work on project-related tasks.

During the programme we’ll work together on a particular topic: how insects were represented in books created for children in the 19th century. This question will help us to think about how children’s encounters with the natural world might have been framed and shaped by their reading. We’ll work on digital collections of 19th century children’s books exploring how such collections are built and how they can be used for machine reading. We’ll develop specific research questions and you’ll learn how to explore them using different tools for textual stylistic analysis. At the end, we’ll present findings and consider the implications of what we’ve discovered.

University staff working in embedded accommodation at Addenbrooke's Hospital should attend the NHS' fire training for its tenants. This will cover general fire safety awareness specific to the main hospital. (See related courses below for further details.)

Chemistry plays a very crucial role in tackling 21st century global challenges. From climate change mitigation to discovering therapeutic strategies for human health and driving sustainable energy production and usage - we are faced with many challenges for which chemical sciences has been providing and will continue to provide many plausible solutions.

Much of the research involved in developing these initiatives requires a huge drive towards interdisciplinary research networks. As such, this course has been developed with some of our colleagues from across the Chemistry Department who are working on exciting and emerging areas with this multidisciplinary focus.

This course will introduce how chemistry can be used as a tool to solve these challenges. First session will include the introduction. Each lecture following this will focus on a different branch, area or concept of chemistry covering the fundamental chemistry and background of how it works, any advances to date and the applications towards tackling these global challenges.

The Programme offers general language tuition with a focus on communicative competence.

At intermediate 2 level the focus shifts slightly towards reading and writing whilst still offering plenty an opportunity for oral communication. The syllabus is more topical and the contents feature many a cultural, historical, political and current affairs theme. While the grammar is analysed within a context, explicit grammar instruction becomes an integral part of the course.

Fire Safety Awareness and Use of Fire Extinguishers Training (2 of 2) CANCELLED 15:15 - 16:15 Greenwich House, Cairo Room

The Fire Safety Awareness course (1400-1500) will raise attendees' awareness of fire safety and assist fire safety managers to comply with current fire safety legislation. Use of Fire Extinguishers training (1515-1615) provides hands on experience in the correct use of portable fire extinguishers.

University staff working in embedded accommodation at Addenbrooke's Hospital should attend the NHS' fire training for its tenants. This will cover general fire safety awareness specific to the main hospital. (See related courses below for further details.)

Dr Christian Gilliam continues to offer one-to-one support to PhD students across the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. However, given the present circumstances relating to Covid-19, one-to-one support will be provided virtually or online using either Skype, Teams or Zoom.

Please bear in mind that topics for discussion should relate to researcher or personal development, and/or advice relating to the management of your PhD project.

Presentation Skills Coaching: Making an Impact (One-to-One or small group) CANCELLED 15:30 - 16:30 Greenwich House, Kyoto Room

If you would like to refine your speaking style, increase your personal impact, or address any concerns you may have about your communication skills, these sessions are aimed at identifying the areas you need to focus on, from how you shape an interesting and effective presentation to how you deliver it, and any point in between.

You may find it useful to have completed the Presentation Skills online module before attending the session.

One-to-one coaching:

  • Please only book one session at a time.
  • It is possible to book a follow-up session for additional support; the course trainer will advise when this may be helpful.
  • Please note that administration and delivery cost for a 1:1 session is significant. Late cancellation or non-attendance costs the University and also prevents another employee from receiving this specialist support.

New small group coaching:

  • Up to 4 colleagues may attend up to 3 sessions together, spread over a few weeks/months.
  • Please book up to 3 of the 1:1 sessions on any date/time (booking under the same lead name) and then email ppd@admin.cam.ac.uk with the names of the additional attendees in the group.
  • This option may be particularly beneficial for those in similar roles or teams, and who would value working together in this area.

The syllabus is more topical and the contents feature many a cultural, historical, political and current affairs theme.
