Description

An introduction to the theory and structure of Library of Congress Subject Headings. There is an opportunity for hands-on participation. Course leaders: Vanessa Lacey, vl203@cam.ac.uk (Head of English Cataloguing) and Fiona Grant, fmg24@cam.ac.uk (Metadata Librarian).

Target audience

For those less familiar with Library of Congress Subject Headings who check the validity of these or apply them as part of their daily activity, or those who will need to do so in the near future.

Prerequisites

Attendees must have a basic knowledge and familiarity with MARC21 and RDA/AACR2

Objectives

By the end of the course participants will be able to:

• Decide what a work is about

• Understand the basic principles and structure of LCSH

• Add some subdivisions - topical, form, geographic and chronological to Library of Congress subject headings

• Understand the content of a MARC 21 authority record

• Practice using tools for subject analysis
