Interactive Induction: Beat the UL Challenge new Finished 10:00 - 11:00 Cambridge University Library: Entrance Hall

Do you have what it takes to beat the UL? Assemble a team to take on the challenge!

A self-led Library induction with a difference! Solve a series of puzzles which will lead you all over the UL, while teaching yourself to navigate the building and our physical collections. Have fun, learn how to use the UL and you will receive a small prize on completion!

Teams of up to 6 players can participate - if you want to play with your friends you'll need to make sure you all sign up to the same session. All players must be registered users of the University Library.

Want to make it even more interesting? Let our staff know on the day if you would like to be timed for a chance to top our Beat the UL leaderboard! You can complete the challenge as many times as you like, but only your first attempt will be timed!

Know Moore About: Using What You Find new Finished 13:00 - 14:00 Cambridge University Libraries Online

You've found some resources, but how do you evaluate them and ethically incorporate these into your work? What do you need to reference?

In this session we will be giving advice on referencing material, avoiding plagiarism and the importance of academic integrity. If you aren’t sure if you should use a reference manager or record your sources manually we will be discussing both and giving our top tips for making your referencing experience as smooth as possible!

We will also be looking at critical reading and evaluation techniques to help you assess the relevance of the material you find.

Getting started with critical reading in Biological Sciences (Part IA/IB) new Finished 14:30 - 15:30 Cambridge University Libraries Online

This live session is designed to build your skills in reading critically and assessing resources as part of your first year studies. Additional techniques around using effective note-taking, selecting what to read from lectures, as well as building your critical language when writing your first pieces of work will also be covered. There will opportunities for discussion throughout the session so you can ask any questions you may have.

This session is for students taking a Biological Sciences route (Natural Sciences, Psychology & MedVet) at Part IA/IB.

Music orientation tour Finished 14:30 - 15:00 Cambridge University Library, Anderson Room

This tour will show you how to find your way around the music collections at the University Library. We will provide tips on how to find and use the various materials relating to music, and demonstrate finding aids for notated music collections in the Anderson Room.

Zotero is a free, open-source reference manager. In this class, we will discuss the benefits of using reference managers and Zotero in particular. In addition to learning the basics of installing and configuring Zotero, you will also learn how to add information about books and articles (and other sources) to Zotero and how to use Zotero to automatically format citations and references in your preferred style.
