Leadership Essentials

Description


Leadership Essentials is a key programme suitable for those with responsibilities for the work, behaviour and development of others. The programme aims to help managers refresh and build their skills and experience in this area, as well as clarifying key responsibilities of manager and leader. It focuses on critical areas, such as giving and receiving feedback effectively and handling challenging conversations, using leadership styles and models to support individuals and teams. The programme incorporates tutor input; opportunities for discussion, case studies, reflection and sharing of good practice with others with similar responsibilities. It also includes curated e-learning resources to support managers with their ongoing learning and development.

Participants are required to attend both full day sessions.

Target audience
  • University staff with professional (line management) responsibility for one or more other members of staff, this includes first line managers, team leads, supervisors, new PIs and researchers with supervisory responsibilities for others

Aims
  • to be able to explain your key responsibilities as a manager/leader and feel confident in carrying out your management role
  • to identify a range of management styles and apply the style most suited to the situation
  • to identify when feedback needs to be given and to give feedback to others in a clear and constructive way
  • to tackle challenging conversations with confidence, ensuring where possible, positive outcomes for all parties
  • to reflect on your capabilities as a manager and identify opportunities for further development
Notes
  • Attendance at both sessions is required
  • A workbook will be sent to you one to two days in advance of the start of the course. You may wish to print this
  • Learning and Development will contact you a few months after participation, to understand progress with applying the learning against the above aims
