This course aims to provide instruction and practice in the creation of bibliographic records for rare books from the hand-press era so that attendees will be equipped with the basic skills to catalogue their library’s early printed books to national standards. Focus will primarily be on 17-18thcentury books printed in England and/or in English. Basic knowledge and familiarity with MARC21 and AACR2 is essential. |
This is a City and Guilds accredited course which will provide delegates with an understanding of the risks and the legal requirements under the Approved Code of Practice Legionnaires' disease. The control of legionella bacteria in water systems 2013. |

Lifting and Manual Handling

This training is for all staff who are regularly involved in moving and carrying loads and setting up equipment etc. The course involves theory, practical and video. It requires active participation by all attending. The training also includes a practical demonstration of safe lifting and shows a range of lifting aids that are available. |

Managing Safely is ideally suited to managers, research supervisors, administrators with safety responsibilities and Departmental Safety Officers across all sectors of the University. This session covers the theory and practice of budgeting in the University, how to interpret department budget reports and understand the causes of overspends (and underspends) against budgets. The course refers closely to Chapter 3 of the Financial Procedures Manual Note: This session does not cover the detailed budgeting and rules relating to individual research grants. |

Do you know how to write a successful research grant application? This course is designed for postdocs with little or no experience of getting their research funded. It will explore the current research environment and impact agenda and help you understand how research is funded. You will also experience the process of reviewing applications and gain valuable and timely knowledge about how to get research funded.

In this the second of three courses, this practical-based course follows on from Web Authoring (Level 1): HTML - For Beginners and is for anyone with a basic understanding of HTML. The course will introduce Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and show how they can (and should) be used effectively when creating web pages. The course teaches how to write CSS from scratch using a basic Text Editor. By the end of the course participants will have adapted the small website created in the 'HTML for Beginners' course consisting of four pages so that it is styled using a single Cascading Style Sheet. Course participants will have the opportunity to publish their web pages using DS-Web. For those wishing to extend their knowledge the third course in this series Web Authoring (Level 3): CSS - Cascading Style Sheets Responsive Web Design introduces Media Queries to make the web site responsive for use on both large screens and mobile phones. |

This is a self-paced Excel Beginners course for those who prefer to learn at their own pace, there is an instructor present to support you if you have questions. Please note that this course has been discontinued and has been replaced by the Introduction to R for biologists.R is a highly-regarded, free, software environment for statistical analysis, with many useful features that promote and facilitate reproducible research. In this course, we give an introduction to the R environment and explain how it can be used to import, manipulate and analyse tabular data. After the course you should feel confident to start exploring your own dataset using the materials and references provided. The course website providing links to the course materials is here. Please note that although we will demonstrate how to perform statistical analysis in R, we will not cover the theory of statistical analysis in this course. Those seeking an in-depth explanation of how to perform and interpret statistical tests are advised to see the list of Related courses. Moreover, those with some programming experience in other languages (e.g. Python, Perl) might wish to attend the follow-on Data Analysis and Visualisation in R course. This event is supported by the BBSRC Strategic Training Awards for Research Skills (STARS) grant (BB/P022766/1). The training room is located on the first floor and there is currently no wheelchair or level access available to this level. This session focusses on providing photography skills for those undertaking archival research. Dr Oliver Dunn has experience spanning a decade filming documents for major academic research projects. He will go over practical approaches to finding and ordering materials in the archive, methods of handling and filming them, digital file storage, and transcription strategies. The focus is very much on low-tech approaches and small budgets. We’ll consider best uses of smartphones, digital cameras and tripods. The session is held at the Digital Content Unit at the University Library. |

This weekly class is intended to help research students in the Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences to develop their skills in reading German documents they need to deal with in their research. Each session will be divided into two parts: The first part will consist of grammar, tasks to develop insight into the reading process, help with dealing with complex sentence structures, academic conventions, abbreviations, etc. The second part will be devoted to the translation of original German texts from different periods and covering a range of topics. Each week you will be asked to attempt a translation into English of a German passage. Students will be encouraged to bring along German texts from their own research to translate. This course is part of the Scientific Computing series. No previous experience of shell scripting is required for this course; however some knowledge of the interactive use of the bash shell is a prerequisite (see Simple Shell Scripting for Scientists: Prerequisites for details). This course introduces shell scripting in bash for scientific computing tasks. Day one introduces very basic shell scripts in bash which process the command line in a simple fashion. Day two covers how to write more advanced shell scripts in bash. Day three covers how to make one's shell scripts more robust. At the end of each day one or more exercises are set. It is VERY IMPORTANT that attendees attempt these exercises before the next day of the course. Attendees should make sure that they have allowed themselves sufficient study time for these exercises between each day of the course. |

The session has been revised to cover both usability testing and assessing the accessibility of websites. This session will help you get started with website usability testing. The session will be interactive and activity-based, which will give you a chance to try out some testing and to reflect as a group on the experience. It will also provide you with some tips and tricks that can be used to help you conduct your own usability testing. If you’ve ever wondered how people actually use your library website, or are currently thinking about how to best revamp your Libguides to match the approaches and needs of your users, this one’s for you! |
