CULP: Japanese Basic 1 Beginners£
The courses are delivered in a blended-learning mode, face-to-face and online through CamTools (the Cambridge University virtual learning environment). The focus is on spoken, oral/aural communicative competence. Students are required to attend to online multimedia materials and read the proscribed texts in their own time so that the classroom time is dedicated to face-to-face communication/discussion.

The Course introduces students to the following functions and notions:
- Introducing yourself
- Counting 1-10
- Saying where you are from
- Saying which language(s) you speak
- Saying what you do for a living
- Introducing yourself and your family
- Talking about your family
- Talking about age
- Booking a table, ordering drinks/food and asking for the bill
- Enquiring about and booking a room
By the end of the Course students will be able to:
- Listening/Speaking: Express simple opinions or requirements in a familiar context.
- Reading: Read fairly confidently the Hiragana and Katakana characters. Understand straightforward information within a known area, such as on products and signs and simple textbooks or reports on familiar matters using Japanese characters.
- Writing: Complete forms and write short simple letters or postcards related to personal information.
At the Basic 1 level the main aims are:
- To introduce students to the complex historical and cultural background of Japan;
- To develop a basic understanding and an appreciation of the salient linguistic features;
- To establish the learner as a fairly confident language user in a range of every-day predictable situations.
