Introduction to R for Biologists (2 of 2) Finished 09:30 - 17:30 Bioinformatics Training Room, Craik-Marshall Building

R is one of the leading programming languages in Data Science. It is widely used to perform statistics, machine learning, visualisations and data analyses. It is an open source programming language so all the software we will use in the course is free. This course is an introduction to R designed for participants with no programming experience. We will start from scratch by introducing how to start programming in R and progress our way and learn how to read and write to files, manipulate data and visualise it by creating different plots - all the fundamental tasks you need to get you started analysing your data. During the course we will be working with one of the most popular packages in R; tidyverse that will allow you to manipulate your data effectively and visualise it to a publication level standard.

The training room is located on the first floor and there is currently no wheelchair or level access available to this level.

This is an opportunity for Cambridge’s teaching staff to see guest speaker, Dale Munday from Lancaster University, showcase how Lancaster University are using MS Teams in higher education.

NOTE: UIS is currently undertaking a review of all the digital collaboration services it provides with a view to rationalising the number of solutions it supports in future. Microsoft Teams is one of the solutions included in the scope of the review. The review is still in progress, and no decisions about which solutions UIS will support in future have yet been reached. This external speaker event is being hosted by UIS independently of the review, and is solely intended to share information about what other HE establishments are doing in the digital education space.

MS Teams is a digital hub that brings conversations, content, and apps together in one 21st Century teaching and learning space. Educators can create collaborative classrooms, connect in professional learning communities, and communicate from a single experience in Office 365 for Education allowing them to create rich, persistent conversation makes learning more visible and accessible to the entire class.

Teachers can engage students in project-based learning with text, video, and voice using integrations. Harnessing student social interactions allow educators to enhance the learning and provide an engaging space to assess and feedback. The opportunity to empower students while helping them develop the skills they'll need to be successful in the future will be demonstrated throughout the session. Approaching assessment & feedback as an ongoing dialogue presented in multi-modal and digital form can support opportunities for learning that are creative, critical, and mirror our increasingly digitally-mediated society.

Delegates will be guided through Microsoft Teams and the process of utilizing a range of digital tools to create an engaging, inclusive and pedagogically underpinned curriculum/classroom. The session will focus on active learning approaches, harnessing the opportunities afforded through digital technologies, where inclusion and collaboration will be at the forefront. Amplifying the synergy between Microsoft Teams and the associated Class OneNote will demonstrate the power of individualised student portfolios and the variety of teaching approaches that can be enhanced through this delivery resource. Building on recent research, which explored the impact of drawing on to-be-learned information, highlighted enhanced memory and found it to be a reliable, replicable means of boosting performance. Teams & Class OneNote allow teachers and students to use digitally handwritten notes, drawings and graphic organisers to enhance the learning experience.

For those who have been working in higher education for some time as well as those who are new to the sector it can feel like a really fast-moving and challenging environment. Change is constant and getting more rapid and less predictable all the time. This session will look at how professional services staff can respond to this transformed landscape and the approaches and attitudes we will need to adopt to survive and thrive. It won’t be all doom and gloom though as we will explore some of the lighter aspects of sector life too.

Yellow Box Searching is 'advanced searching' in Amicus. You can use it to find specific selections of data or contacts from within Amicus. Many Amicus users use yellow box search in the first step to creating a mailing or inviting contacts to an event.

This session will be aimed at specific users within CUDAR. You will be generating yellow box searches, then using a specific event report, to export the data into excel.

I am writing to invite you to attend one of a number of Focus Groups, where you will be asked to give feedback on questions relating to some of the outcomes of the staff survey. The session will last around 90 minutes. The aim will be to hear from everyone in the group and to seek different opinions and ideas, including:

 Your views about the staff survey;

 Your thoughts about improvements we can make related to the subject areas outlined below.

There are a number of conversations taking place to address the outcomes of the staff survey at both the University and Institution level. We are keen to hear from staff across all our Faculty and Departmental libraries, and from departments within the University Library building. The Focus Groups will look at the following topic area:

CHRIS - An Introduction Finished 09:30 - 13:00 University Information Services, Roger Needham Building, Ely Training Room 1

This course is an introduction to the system and will cover the following topics:

  • Additional guidance relating to searches and exporting information out of CHRIS into Excel or Word
  • An overview of how personal details are recorded
  • An overview of how the system is used to record absence (sickness, maternity, paternity etc) for individuals
  • Employment details for individuals including items such as grade, salary, hours and limit of tenure
  • Costing details
  • How your department is structured on CHRIS and the posts it contains
  • A quick update on reporting

This course does not cover any training on update access.

This course covers the practical steps you need to take in order to ensure that work submitted for publication by University of Cambridge researchers is compliant for REF2021.

We will introduce the principles of open access and open research, and guide you through the necessary steps to meet the open access requirements of REF2021. We will demonstrate key processes for uploading work to Symplectic, including choosing the right version of a work to upload. There will be plenty of time in the session to ask questions, and for you to try out uploading papers.

This course will be useful to you if you:

  • administer the uploading of research outputs to Symplectic Elements to make them open access
  • manage Symplectic profiles

Innovation & Enterprise Summer School
This year, RDP is pleased to launch an Innovation & Enterprise Summer School for PhD students, led by Dr Emma Williams of EJW Solutions.

Innovation and enterprise are essential aspects of modern research, whether in a university or commercial setting. Developing ideas and assessing their viability; finding backers and a team collaborators; securing financial support; making a plan to deliver results – these are common to research in every field, and every sector. In this summer school, you can refresh your existing skills as well as learning new insights and practical models. You can use the summer school to focus intensively on your current research, or you can use it to try out new ideas. You don’t need to have any plans for, or prior experience of, knowledge exchange and commercialisation.

The four sessions of the summer school have been designed as a pathway, but you are welcome to book for single sessions, i.e. there is no requirement to sign up for the whole programme or to have completed the preceding sessions in order to book for a later one.


Workshop 2: Mapping out success in research and enterprise
Wouldn’t it be great if we could explore all the aspects of our research project or start-up idea easily? Using a canvas allows you to do just that.
We will use the Successful Researcher Canvas to explore your current research. Then, after exploring the business concept of ‘value’, we will generate business ideas using the Business Model canvas. This interactive morning will provide you with a roadmap for your research whilst giving you a great grounding in what it takes to build a start-up.

A course to take you through conference poster design, with tips and resources to help with the content and presentation in order to ensure you communicate your research effectively. The course will cover where to source good quality, free graphics, how to include references in your poster, and advice about how best to present it at a conference. The session will NOT involve hands-on creation of a poster.

This short session will provide an understanding of the principles, tools and techniques involved in Process Analysis with a view to improving business process effectiveness and efficiency. Delegates will have the opportunity to practice using the techniques that they learn via exercises designed to be enjoyable and thought provoking.

The course refers to the methodology used in conjunction with Triaster process mapping software available to users across the University of Cambridge.

EU Settlement Scheme: A Briefing new Finished 13:00 - 15:00 Department of Zoology, Main Lecture Theatre

Following the EU Referendum in June 2016, the University has been working to assist its EU/EEA and Swiss staff with legal and practical guidance around residency and citizenship options. It is the government’s ambition to document all EU/EEA/Swiss nationals who are present in the UK, through the introduction of ‘Settled’ and ‘Pre-Settled’ status. This scheme was opened fully to the public in March 2019.

Following the success of similar sessions which were ran last year, we are pleased to offer a further series of presentations which will provide information on current residency rights, and a detailed overview of the settled and pre-Settled status application process, and details on how to apply for British Citizenship if desired. These presentations give you the opportunity to see the application process first hand and to give you the information you need to make an application.

Note: In the event the UK leaves the EU on 31 October 2019 with ‘no deal’ there is no obligation or requirement for EU/EEA or Swiss citizens to gain settled or pre-settled status by this date. The deadline for applications in the event of a no-deal is currently 31 December 2020.

The presentations will be led by Graeme Ross, the Immigration and Compliance Manager at the University, who is an experienced UK and EU immigration practitioner.

Three seminars will be provided initially, with further sessions available should there be sufficient demand. There will be an opportunity at the end of each presentation for questions and answers.
