Introduction to Linear Modelling with R (Online)

Fri 14 May 2021

Description

PLEASE NOTE The Bioinformatics Team are presently teaching as many courses live online, with tutors available to help you work through the course material on a personal copy of the course environment. We aim to simulate the classroom experience as closely as possible, with opportunities for one-to-one discussion with tutors and a focus on interactivity throughout.

The course will cover ANOVA, linear regression and some extensions. It will be a mixture of lectures and hands-on time using RStudio to analyse data.

This event is part of a series of training courses organized in collaboration with the Bioinformatics Core Facility at CRUK Cambridge Institute.

Please note that if you are not eligible for a University of Cambridge Raven account you will need to Book or register Interest by linking here.

Target audience
  • Graduate students, Postdocs and Staff members from the University of Cambridge, Affiliated Institutions and other external Institutions or individuals
  • Please be aware that these courses are only free for registered University of Cambridge students. All other participants will be charged a registration fee in some form. Registration fees and further details regarding the charging policy are available here.
  • Further details regarding eligibility criteria are available here
Prerequisites

This course assumes basic knowledge of statistics and use of R, which would be obtained from our Introductory Statistics Course and an Introduction to R for Biologists run at the Genetics department (or equivalent).

Objectives

After this course you should be able to:

  • Realise the connection between t-tests, ANOVA and linear regression
  • Fit a linear regression
  • Check if the assumptions of linear regression are met by the data and what to do if they are not
  • Know when linear regression is not appropriate and have an idea of which alternative method might be appropriate
  • Know when you need to seek help with analysis as the data structure is too complex for the methods taught
Aims

During this course you will learn about:

  • ANOVA
  • Simple and multiple regression
  • Introduction to more advanced topics, like Generalised Linear Models and Time Series.
